1st American Edition. Black & white engraved frontispiece with tissue guard and title page decorated with a vignette, one full-page illustration, small illustrations and music throughout. Red cloth covered boards (slightly discoloured), stamped & decorated in black, spine slightly faded and gilt rubbed. Prior owner details neatly written in copperplate on front fixed endpaper. Endpapers have light foxing but the rest of the text block is clean and sound. 16.6 x 11cm. The first edition of this work was published in 1857 edited by the Reverend Steuart Adolphus Pears (1815-1875) who was a schoolmaster and author, he was headmaster of Repton school.
