Am Tag nach ihrer Ankunft machen die beiden Freundinnen einen Spaziergang entlang der Seine, wo Diet ein Kinderbuch von Sophie de Segur ersteht. Als sie anschließend auf der Terrasse des Cafes Dupont rasten, fällt ihr das Buch vom Schoß. Ein junger Mann am Nebentisch hebt es für sie auf. Dieser Mann ist Paul Celan. Es ist der Beginn einer knapp einjährigen Beziehung. Der Dichter im Exil, seit Juli 1948 in Paris, trifft auf eine junge, aber doch schon vom Krieg gezeichnete Frau, die - selbst gegen die deutschen Besatzer aktiv - ihren Mann im Widerstand verloren hat. Gegen die Last der Vergangenheit verständigen sie sich in der inständigen Hoffnung auf Zukunft. In der einen Ferienwoche, die beide in Paris miteinander verbringen, aber auch in dem darauffolgenden Briefwechsel bis zu ihrem Wiedersehen entwickelt sich schon bald etwas ganz Besonderes.
