The discussion turns to where `relief' may be obtained after drinking quantities of tea or lager when walking through the streets of London. We are told that the `places that have no attendants afford excellent rendezvous to people who wish to meet out of doors and yet escape the eye of the Busy.' (police). The book could be read at as an entertaining, straight forward guide to London's public conveniences but yet to our more sceptical eye it is patently a guide to where men could meet like-minded men in an era when homosexuality was illegal. It remains a classic whether taken at face value or not. This title is one of the first on the Muswell Press LGBT+ list launching in Autumn 2019. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Focusing on public conveniences but very wittily written and fashioned by the author to give no indication of its real purpose. His early works often dealt with military scenes, including colour plates for The Martial Achievements, The Wars of Wellington, etc.[4], but from about 1820 on he focused on satire. Between 1827 and 1829, many of his works were published under the pseudonym Paul Pry (the name of an overly inquisitive stage character in a popular 1825 stage comedy by John Poole; also used the pseudonym Argus. He was described by Dr John Brown, biographer of John Leech as poor Heath, the ex-Captain of Dragoons, facile and profuse, unscrupulous and clever. See WIKI.

String bound tan stiff paper wrappers with titles and decorative border printed in black to front wrapper, and publisher's advertisement and decorative border printed in black to back wrapper with rubbing and wear along spine and light scattered soiling for what is a lovely copy of the book. Gift inscription on front paste-down. [12] leaves printed one side only. The book contains humorous letterpress verses describing gymnastic exercises witnessed but not understood by a simple county dweller on his recent trip to the big city of London; illustrated with eleven excellent half page hand colored wood engravings, all of which are in fine condition. The condition of the book is VERY GOOD +. Only one copy located on OCLC/WorldCat (Princeton University Library). EXCEEDINGLY RARE.

BM 13489. Landscape. On a piece of wove paper, roughly 215 x 305 mm. Good, on heavily-aged paper and with strip of blue paper mount adhering to the blank reverse. The title 'BERNADOTTE' is at the head, and the publication details and caption at the foot. Shows Bernadotte in martial pose and uniform, riding his white horse over a fearsome serpent. He wears a sash on which are written the words 'Leipsic' and 'Victory'. The caption reads 'Round the head is a wreath of Laurel, which alludes to the brilliant Victories gain'd over the Scourge of the World, the Epaulette head of a lion the Star is formed Of the Trophies taken from the Tyrant, the Thigh is a figure of Liberty holding in Chains the Fiend Slavery, the Sheild the Swedish Cross, with the Sun Shining on the allies who are represented on the Shield, the Horse is in the act of Trampling on a Serpent alluding to the Fallen State of Buonaparte.' A companion piece to the Ackermann/Heath engraving 'BUONAPARTE', BM 12195 (offered separately), and to another portrait, of Alexander I of Russia (not in the British Museum). See Image.

Landscape. On a piece of wove paper. Originally a rectangle roughly 240 x 340 mm, but with an arc cut away beginning in the top left-hand corner and ending at bottom right. This loss has no effect on the text, and only the merest effect on the image, only trimming the outer edge of some very lightly-painted clouds. Apart from this good, on lightly spotted paper, with a thin strip from blue paper mount adhering to the blank reverse. Depicts a ghoulish Bonaparte, with a snake wrapped round his body, a sword of power in his withered hand, and a murderous crown, riding a winged horse of death across the globe. The title 'BUONAPARTE' is at the head, and the publication details and caption at the foot. Caption reads 'The Horse represents Ambition leading on the Fiend, whose body is encompassd. by an Enormous Serpent, the wither'd hand and Arm grasping the broken Sword alludes to The Feeble effort made by Buonaparte to oppose the Conquering arms of the Allies. A Crown Encircles his brows formd of Daggers and Poison Cups alludes to murdering his own Soldiers The Thighs are formd of the Skeletons of the Massacred hosts, the boot a Deamon his guardian Genius'. Satirical cartoon published April 28, 1829, satirizing the Marchioness of Conyngham, wife of an Irish peer, treasured mistress of King George IV and at one time Czar Nicholas. See BM Satires No. 15733. Lady Conyngham stands as a very heavy woman, feet apart, with a cocked blunderbuss under her arm, in the manner of a gamekeeper. The caption reads "I says to our Governor says I. keep your eye on them ere Leaders George. 9 3/8 x 13 1/4" with very small margins, tipped onto a larger sheet, with the actual name of the satirized person penciled below in an early hand. Very fresh period hand color. Very crisp.

Etched and engraved print with contemporary hand colouring, 270 x 370 mm. sheet size, a little browning and edges a little chipped not affecting image. One of William Heath's "March of Intellect" series of satires on modern technological progress, in this instance showing various flying machines, as well as an early steam powered vehicle, and a carriage drawn by a kite.
