Devenue une icône mondiale de l?architecture moderne de l?entre-deux-guerres, la Villa Cavrois n?a pas toujours connu cet éclat. Habitée par la famille éponyme jusqu?au milieu des années 1980, elle fut cédée à un voisin plus préoccupé de promotion immobilière que de protection du patrimoine. Pendant une quinzaine d?années, elle subit les affres d?une lente et profonde dégradation due à son abandon et à son occupation illégitime. Elle fut victime de vols, de saccages.Même si elle fut classée monument historique en 1990 par un décret du Premier ministre de l?époque, son propriétaire en bloqua la protection. En janvier 1991, à l?initiative de quelques personnalités architecturales et culturelles se créa l?Association de sauve-garde de la Villa Cavrois, qui milita avec passion pour la restauration de la demeure. Ce chantier débuta après l?acquisition de la propriété par l?État en 2001 et se termina en juin 2015.Ce livre raconte l?histoire de ce sauvetage exceptionnel et de la lutte menée par des passionnés. Fondé sur des témoignages et documents rares, rassemblant des images méconnues, il décrit les étapes de cette renaissance unique dans l?histoire de l?architecture moderne en France.
