Bordas Demoulin, taken from a speech which won the prize awarded by the French Academy on June 30th, 1842. In addition to an essay by François de Neufchateau regarding the letters and style of Pascal. Blaise Pascal was a French mathematician, physicist and philosopher who began writing works on theology and philosophy after a religious experience in 1654. His 'Lettres provinciales', were a series of letters written during the formulary controversy between the Jansenists and the Jesuits. In his letters, Pascal defends the Jansenist, Antoine Arnauld, who was condemned for his 'heretical' views. Arnauld was also a friend of Pascal. With a bookseller's label for 'P. Rolandi' to the front free endpaper. In full morocco binding. Externally, very smart with some light rubbing to the edges. Some fading to the spine. A few marks to the boards.
