Writing under the pseudonym Holme Lee, the works of Harriet Parr were well-reviewed in her life time and some novels were also published in America. Prior owner's ink inscription to the front paste down. The inscription reads, 'Henry, from his aff. Grandmamma Matilda W Vernon. Cowley House, Oxford, Dec 25. 1844' Four pages of publisher's adverts to the rear. In the publisher's original blue cloth binding. Externally, sound. Rubbed to the boards and the spine, with a two-inch tear to the front joint near the tail. The spine is missing a slither of cloth to both the head and the tail. The front hinge has failed, and is held on by cords only. The rear hinge is starting, and is a little tender. Internally, the binding is a little loose. After gaining considerable popularity after publishing her first work 'Maude Talbot' in 1854, Harriet Parr produced an extensive output of works, approximately one novel a year, under the pen name 'Holme Lee'. These works sold well during her lifetime, and she even had three of her stories purchased by Charles Dickens for the Christmas numbers of his weekly magazines. This work was originally bound in three volumes; rebound in this work into one volume. Featuring a tipped in bookplate of a 'T. Hodgson of Bratled Villa' to the front pastedown. In a red blind embossed cloth binding with gilt lettering to spine. Externally worn to extremities and head and tail of spine. Fading and rubbing to boards and spine, with splits to cloth to joints. Front hinge weak and may detach with further handling. The rear hinge has failed. Internally generally firmly bound, strained in places. Pages are generally bright and clean with the odd spot.
