He chronicles his efforts, through The Field, in such areas as grey squirrel control, research into partridge disease, and particularly his campaigns against egg-collecting and the sale of wild birds, culminating in the Wild Birds Protection Act. The latter part of the book, following the death of his wife, contains transcripts of many "sittings" or seances. Only brief mentions of angling. .
