Bound in blue cloth titled in gilt to the upper cover, 7 inches tall approx., with a coloured illuminated title page, running to 56 pages with errata slip. CONDITION There is marking to upper cover, general mild edge rubbing wear, internally old inscription to front endpaper (pictured), heavy foxing to plain reverse of title page, else in good general condition. A very scarce poem, only one copy located on Copac, This is a lighter item, overseas shipping costs will be reduced at checkout where possible.

The covers with some rubbing, bumping and wear. Outer joints are rubbed, but all soundly bound. Text is bright and clean throughout, with clean and attractive plates. Burgundy endpapers with some rubbing. With gilt top edge to text block. A very usable copy of this substantial and comprehensive work. With portrait frontispiece of the author with his facsimile signature. With age spotted tissue guard. With one additional plate with printed guard (no spotting). 16pp, 8vo. Saddle-stitched into (the original?) plain blue wraps. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn, with slight damage and damp staining to back wrap. A laudatory assessment of Richardson's life, attainments and achievements, concluding with the observation that 'no marble monument will be needed to tell the coming age, that he lived and died in the heart of this community. Confusing entries on OCLC WorldCat appear to list six copies, none in England. "William Merchant Richardson (January 4, 1774 March 15, 1838) was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Massachusetts and chief justice of the New Hampshire Supreme Court.".

Full Calf leather. 696, 552 pp. Eight fold out plates/maps in volume one, three in volume two, all present as called for. 1793 edition of this early geographical survey of the United States, as well as the world, containing maps relating to the United States at the time, North America and the world. This work served to heavily influence the teaching of geography and education in the US. GOOD condition. Moderate to heavy scuffing to the leather covers and extremities, with a few deep scrapes and scratches present. Minor soiling and staining. Interiors solid, with moderate toning, scattered foxing, staining and soiling. Dampstaining present to the endpapers. Ownership signatures present. A few pages creased, including dog ear creases. The Virginia map is very tattered, torn and misfolded, with a few other American maps also bearing tears ranging from small to long, along the folds. Some creasing to the maps. Sabin 50926.

I pute a man to smoke perbacky in mun, and I rousted a Tryan and squeery cum squaten in till I sweat again with the hett and pain'. To the question 'How old are you?' May replies: 'Sixty, I bleve, if they tell true in the recumgister: when I was twelve years ould I weighed feefty pounds zactly and Faither said I was too little for a man and too big for a monkey, there was his galloping 'xpression'. And to the question 'Do you ever cut your hair?': 'No I do pute the Maidens to singe ut off wi the gandle and I ne'r got any trouble, for the be very willing to do't. I must hett my hat and wheel trucky away, but I must count ten first to be lucky and when I be driving my Negers the wiffery cum jiffles do come in my head and I do bust out a laughing and nowbudy wi muh.'
