(frontis. portrait of author, pen & ink drawings) An Englishman's anecdotal opinions on America and Americans, based on his journey to the U.S. and his travel, while there, between New York and Chicago. He has the most to say about New York, where he evidently spent much of his time; the purpose for extending his trip to Chicago seems to have been to inform any of his fellow countrymen who might be thinking of attending the World's Fair, scheduled for 1893, about the city. His preface is dated June 1892, and although no publication date is stated in the book itself, that seems to have been the date accepted by OCLC. (There is a chapter entitled "The World's Fair," but it's all in future tense.) Mr. Gordon has a lot to say about a lot of things; some of the more interesting chapter titles being: "Insurance, Jews, and Justice"; "New York Papers"; "The Negro Problem in the United States"; "Mr. Edison"; and "The American Trotter." (There's also a short paean to the wonderful American dentists, which is stuck, rather weirdly, onto the end of the "Negro Problem" chapter; it incorporates a specific shout-out to a Dr. Nisley, "whose kitten-like fingers with which Nature has endowed him make the most searching operations painless." In 1876 Harry Panmure Gordon (1837-1902) founded the financial company Gordon & Co. which was subsequently renamed H. Panmure Gordon & Company. The firm's founder was a well-known member in London?s financial community and in 1892 H. Panmure Gordon wrote the book "Land of the Almighty Dollar"- a critical review of the U.S., particularly New York and Chicago. Panmure Gordon initially specialized in debt offerings for foreign governments. The firm also developed a reputation for conducting offerings for a large number of British and American breweries, including for the San Francisco Brewing Company in 1890.
