Although he worked on ornithological issues that spanned the globe, Dillon Ripley's first love, no doubt, was South Asia, and his long friendship and collaboration with Salim Ali ce-mented that commitment to India and its neighboring regions. Ripley's first visit to the Subcontinent was made with his sister in the 1920s, in the days of British India. He continued to visit for sixty years, and South Asia remained in his heart, I am certain, to his last day. It is sad that Mr. Ripley did not live to see the publi-cation of this volume. He was much intrigued by its possibilities.
