Printed on paper that is noticeably thinner than the pre-war and later post-war issues, due to post-war economy paper rationing. Contents very good. 215mm x 140mm. 70 pages [pp.290-360], including three pages of period adverts. ***An early post-war issue of this literary journal, published by Cyril Connolly as editor, and Stephen Spender as associate editor. This issue includes the following contributions: 'Novelist-Philosophers IX - R. L. Stevenson and G. D. Brown: The Myth of Lord Braxfield' by J. D. Scott, 'Some Recollections of Paul Valery' by Dorothy Bussy, 'A Letter About Architecture' by E. Maxwell Fry, with illustrations, 'Samuel Palmer's Friends' by Geoffrey Grigson, 'Design and Function in Typography' by Holbrook Jackson, 'Portrait of a Town' by Bernard Gutteridge, Poems by Olivier Larronde and Reviews by Julia Strachey. ***'Horizon: A Review of Literature and Art was a literary magazine published every four weeks in London, between December 1939 and January 1950. The magazine was edited by Cyril Connolly, who made it into a platform for a wide range of distinguished and emerging writers. It had a print run of 120 issues. The magazine had a small circulation of around 9,500, but an impressive list of contributors, and it made a significant impact on the arts during and just after the war.' Advertisements published in the New York Times in December 1863 announced the painting's exhibition at a Manhattan art gallery, where visitors could purchase a fifty-four-page booklet describing the work. "It is, in the truest and completest sense, a National picture," the anonymous author declared, and its production "will be universally regarded as a National event."The painting resulted from a collaborative effort. The photographer Mathew Brady captured the likeness of each writer (including Nathaniel Hawthorne, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Irving himself), and the artist F. O. C. Darley designed the group composition. Working from those materials, Christian Schussele painted this canvas while Thomas Oldham Barlow engraved a widely reproduced print.From the collection of Frederic Gale Ruffner, Jr., the founder of Gale Research, Detroit.

Glorification of Cornelis de Witt: the commander in armour, holding a commandostaf, is represented on the left, being crowned with laurel by flying putti while a Fame is blowing a trumpet. On the background the trip to Chatham (June 1667). On the left also a cornucopia with symbols of the prosperity of land and wealth. This illu…stration was used in Jan Wagenaar's "Vaderlandsche historie", published in Amsterdam between 1749-1759, in 21 volumes. This pint belongs to vol. XIII, p. 478. The original painting in the town hall of Dordrecht was destroyed in 1672, soon after the horrifying death of the de Witt brothes. Signed lower right corner: "S.Fokke fec"; on the left corner: "A.
