Hardcover. Zustand: New. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: New. 1st Edition. Contents: Preface. 1. Theory in archaeology: the new archaeology and later developments. 2. Theoretical perspectives in Indian archaeology. 3. Don't we need more "falls through the roof"? 4. Darwinian revolution and the birth of prehistory. 5. The past in the Indian mind. 6. The relevance of the past: from Sir William Jones to Amartya Sen. Index. The essays included in this book are based on the invited lectures delivered by the author at various places in the country during the last five years. These essays endeavour to focus attention on one of the neglected-but truly vital-domains of Indian archaeology, viz. critical assessment of various theoretical approaches employed in the investigation of archaeological record in India and examination of the larger sociological dimensions of the study of the past. The first two essays examine the merits of New Archaeology and Interpretive Archaeology and their relevance in the Indian context. The third essay considers the place of non-professional writings about the past. The following essay highlights the larger scientific ferment in the nineteenth century which facilitated the birth of prehistory. The last two essays seek to draw attention to the inseparable links that exist between the past and the present in India and their sociological implications.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. Beginning in the 1960s, the influential archaeologist Lewis R. Binford challenged a field whose explanatory framework for interpreting the archaeological record was, he wrote, "by convention a simple reflection of the social identity of the creators" of that record. He responded to that inflexible perspective by committing himself to the development of a methodology that would result in a much more robust and secure understanding of the dynamic factors that produced the static archaeological record. Over the course of a lifetime dedicated to personal learning, he did ethnographic fieldwork with hunters and gatherers in the Arctic, the Kalahari Desert, and the Australian outback, studied large-scale environmental and ecological processes, and, at the much smaller scale of the human individual, observed how such things as physical constraints on movement conditioned archaeological site structure. In ten books and numerous scholarly articles Binford discussed the evolution of his ideas and their effect on the trajectory of his research. Two of his monographs, Nunamiut Ethnoarchaeology (1978) and Bones, Ancient Men and Modern Myths (1981) are foundational studies of research undertaken to securely link the statics of the archaeological record to the dynamic conditions that produced them. Working at Archaeology (1983) and Debating Archaeology (1989) contain numerous journal articles, written between 1968 and 1988, which became widely used by his contemporaries in their teaching and research. The thirty-seven lectures in Teaching Archaeology comprise his course, Strategies of Archaeology, presented during the 1982 fall semester at the University of New Mexico. They reflect his numerous concerns, progressing from a discussion of the nature of the archaeological record and the intellectual tools required to decode it, to how to operationalize the archaeological record to evaluate theories. Binford balances the abstract segments of his presentations with abundant historical and contemporary examples of attempts to explain the meaning of the in-ground remnants from the past. He continued to teach and do research for more than twenty years, during which the strategies outlined in these lectures became an essential part of method and theory in contemporary archaeology. Three of his papers, previously published in India and included here as Appendices, fully complement the topics dealt with in the lectures.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. Prehistoric Research in the Indian Subcontinent is, on the one hand, a commemoration of the 150 years of the study of Indian prehistory, whose beginnings stretch back to Robert Bruce Foote's discovery of the famous sites of Pallavaram and Attirampakkam in 1863, and, on the other a timely study of recent researches in the prehistory of the subcontinent, highlighting regional and sub-regional variations. The first three essays in this volume are extremely valuable in their critical stock-taking of prehistoric research, paleontological studies and paleoenvironmental reconstructions in the subcontinent. The regional and sub-regional variations of prehistoric cultures are brought out in papers focusing on a variety of areas like the Son Valley, the Narmada, the Hunsgi valley, the Teri dune sites and the central Ganga valley where research has continued for over three decades. Essays on lesser known areas like the Ayodhya hill region of West Bengal, cave sites in the limestone karst zone of Nagaland bordering upon Myanmar, and the Chakalpunji area in north-eastern Bangladesh add to our knowledge with their unique findings. Overall, these essays reflect the vibrant nature of Stone Age research in this part of the world even as they draw our attention to the many gaps that exist in our reconstruction the Arts (Southern Region, Bangalore). This book will be of lasting pertinence to not just scholars of History, Historical Geography but also Archival Studies and will bring attention gaps that exist in our reconstruction the Arts in South Indian Region.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. The essays as well as reminiscences comprising this book are of historiographical interest and deal with the contributions of five distinguished archaeologists who were active during the first three or four decades after independence. All of them were closely associated with the legendary archaeologist Professor H.D. Sankalia and the famed Department of Archaeology at the Deccan College in Pune which he had founded in 1939. R.V. Joshi, B. Subbarao, S.B. Deo and Z.D. Ansari were pupils (later colleagues) of Professor Sankalia. Their field investigations were prolonged and pan-Indian, and covered in particular prehistory, protohistory and early historical archaeology. G.G. Mujumdar established a chemistry laboratory at the Deccan College and pioneered studies in pottery replication, soil chemistry and other branches of archaeochemistry. All of them carried forward the high traditions which the Deccan College had set in critical scholarship, teaching and publications. Pooled together, their work illustrates both the depth and the range of contributions made by workers in Western India towards making Indian archaeology a very vibrant and respected branch of study during the first half of the post-independence period.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. Contents: Preface. Introduction. 1. The Ashmound Problem. 2. Raymond Allchin's Contributions to Ashmound Studies. 3. Post-Cattle-Keepers Studies. 4. Sequel to Budihal Excavations. 5. Discussion. References. Index. Neolithic ashmounds of the Deccan represent burnt cow-dung accumulations and occupy a unique place in the archaeological record of the world. Their initial discoveries stretch back to the opening years of the 19th century. Setting aside various fanciful opinions expressed about their age and origin, Raymond Allchin of Cambridge University published a full monograph titled Neolithic Cattle-Keepers of South India: A Study of the Deccan Ashmounds (1963). Combining archaeological evidence from his explorations and excavation at Utnur with ethnographic data of various kinds from the area, he showed that the ashmounds were seasonal cattle camps of the Neolithic pastoralists. Further, he convincingly argued that the accumulated cow-dung deposits at these camps were intentionally burnt as part of cattle fertility rites. The present monograph is the second major publication on the topic of ashmounds. It is based on Paddayya's fresh field studies of all major ashmounds in southern Deccan and seven seasons of large-scale excavations at Budihal in North Karnataka. While confirming Allchin's views about the Neolithic age of ashmounds and association of cow-dung burnings with cattle fertility rites, Paddayya goes one step further and asserts that these sites represent year-round pastoral settlements with a provision for cattle penning, cow-dung disposal and human settlement. In addition, Budihal preserved evidence of human and animal bone burials, an animal butchering floor connected with community feasting and an extensive workshop of chert blade industry which supplied finished products to other sites in the region. Budihal was a regional centre where the Neolithic groups from nearby sites gathered on periodic occasions similar to present-day jatras and cattle-fairs and entered into socio-economic transactions of various kinds leading to maintenance of regional cultural identity. Paddayya also insists that many adaptive as well as mind-expressive aspects of the folk cultures of the Deccan have their roots in the Southern Neolithic culture. He concludes by emphasizing that topics like the one dealing with ashmounds serve to underscore the need for bringing the archaeology of Peninsular India centre stage in future archaeological investigations in the country. Importance of surface sites in Indian palaeolithic research: a case study from the Hunsgi and Baichbal valleys, Karnataka. Index. The thirteen essays making up this volume are a methodological complement to K. Paddayya's essays in theoretical archaeology already published in two books entitled Multiple Approaches to the Study of India's Early Past: Essays in Theoretical Archaeology (2014) and Revitalizing Indian Archaeology: Further Essays in Theoretical Archaeology (2016). The present anthology comprises writings dealing with certain general level as well as specific techniques and methods that are part of contemporary methodology employed for studying archaeological record. The first three essays in Part I deal with certain specific aspects of lithic technology and also underscore the fact that stone use is still common in India and that there is much that prehistorians could learn from it. The next essay argues that Lewis Binford triggered the use of quantitative methods in contemporary archaeology. The last two essays in this part emphasize the significance of experimental, ethnographic and ethno-primatological approaches in the interpretation of Stone Age archaeological record. Two major methodological issues pertaining to prehistoric archaeology in India run through the seven essays included in Part II. These are: a) need to shift the focus of field research from the discovery of secondary locations to the investigation of primary sites and consider these in a regional ecological framework and b) employment of formation processes for ascertaining the natural and cultural contexts of Stone Age sites. These approaches are an essential prerequisite for elevating prehistoric studies from a preoccupation with what Mortimer Wheeler called 'Stones' and 'More Stones' to the reconstruction of cultures as functioning settlement systems. The volume concludes with a strong plea to accord a prominent place to much neglected surface sites in Stone Age research. It is to be hoped that these essays will go some way to motivate younger scholars to turn to prehistory as a challenging but fascinating endeavour that peeps into our remote and yet foundational past.
