The spine is faded with its titling completely faded. 215 & [1] deckle-edged pages. Illustrated in black & white with 6 plates, including a portrait frontispiece, & with full-page illustrations. The gutters are darkened & there is a bookseller's sticker on the front pastedown with a previous owner's ink name & date on the front endpaper. 1 plate is detached. There is light staining to the margins of the frontispiece & the half-title & title pages and the inner edges of the pages are slightly darkened throughout. Good. The title page of Harrington's English verse version, published in 1608, reads: "The Englishmans Doctor. Or, The Schoole of Salerne. Or, Physicall observations for the perfect Preserving of the body of Man in continuall health". The Latin text of Regimen Sanitatis Salernitanum is also included in the book. …

Packard, John H. (1832-1907). Sea-air and sea-bathing. 12mo. 124 [4]pp. Philadelphia: P. Blakiston, 1880. 147 x 110 mm. Original cloth, a little worn, rear hinge starting. Lightly browned, library stamps on title and 1 or 2 other leaves, but very good. Library bookplate. First Edition. Includes a chapter on resuscitation of the apparently drowned, describing various methods of artificial respiration, as well as chapters on the medical benefits and dangers of sea-bathing. Packard served in the Civil War in several capacities, writing the useful Manual of Minor Surgery (1863) for the surgeons of the Union Army. He was a founding member of the American Surgical Association, and author of numerous surgical works, including a translation of Malgaigne's treatise on fractures (1859) and a handbook of operative surgery (1870). During the 19th century it was common for doctors to prescribe a course of sea-bathing to their patients as a means of promoting health and vigor; Packard's small treatise on this subject was based primarily on his own experiences of summers spent on the New Jersey shore. Packard, M.D. (1832-1907) was one of the most prominent American surgeons of the last part of the 19th century. A pioneer of modern American surgery, he graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Medical School in 1853 and, until his retirement in 1896, he practiced surgery in various Philadelphia hospitals, teaching surgery, pathology, and anatomy. He served as acting assistant surgeon in two Union Army hospitals during the Civil War and this popular textbook was adopted by the U.S. Army. On p. 86, Packard states that "Chloroform is preferred by some surgeons of eminence in the United States . It is pleasanter than ether, but more dangerous, many cases of death from its use having occurred." Packard used chloroform exclusively until 1864, due to its potency, speed of action, and the intense muscular relaxation that it produced. But in May 1865, he reported to the Philadelphia College of Physicians that, after witnessing several life-threatening or fatal accidents in his own or in his colleagues' practices, he was switching to ether.During the Battle of Gettysburg, Packard received orders to report at the battlegrounds and, although quite ill with typhoid at the time, he obeyed the call. For three days and nights he laboured over the wounded but, being unable to continue, was sent back to Philadelphia suffering from a near-fatal attack of the fever (Kelly & Burrage, American Medical Biographies).…
