Hardcover. Zustand: New. An extraordinary story of a forbearing and compassionate Maharaja, who identified with the masses and worked diligently for his people. Born in a royal family in the erstwhile Bihar and Orissa Province of British India, Maharaja Rajendra Narayan Singh Deo was adopted by the Maharaja of Patna State to become heir to a coveted throne that had witnessed betrayal and tragedy. Educated at the best institutions in India, he became the ruler of Patna State in the turbulent 1930s. Inspired by Gandhian principles of simple living, he remained detached from power and implemented in his state a uniquely democratic system of governance, development, infrastructure and welfare measures far ahead of its time. Until one day, it all ended. Rajendra Narayan became the first ruler of a princely state to sign the merger agreement for accession into the Union of India in December 1947. Led by his example, other princely states followed suit. He discarded his princely duties and left Patna State, planning to live a simple life in a Himalayan cave. But fate had other plans. His people beseeched him to return and take charge of state politics. Throughout his political career, he was lovingly addressed as Maharaja by his people, subordinates and even other political figures of the time. His legacy of reforming the socio-economic and cultural ethos of Odisha and its governance both as Maharaja of Patna and later as a parliamentarian and chief minister of Odisha in the 1960s is an extraordinary tale of service, political acumen and intellectual brilliance.…

Mechanics of Solids is a basic engineering course that deals with the behaviour of solid bodies subjected to various types of loading. The basic objectives of this course are the determination of the stresses, strains and deformations produced by the loads. The main objective of this book is to present the aspects of mechanics of materials in unified and integrated manner. This book is structured to meet the requirements of the course contents of Mechanics of Solids or Strength of Materials for undergraduate students of civil, mechanical and aerospace engineering. It is also a valuable reference for practising engineers and architects. The book covers the syllabi of various universities and AICTE undergraduate curriculum of engineering and solid mechanics. All the chapters are equipped with basic background of the problems and solved examples. Complex problems are illustrated for competitive and university examinations. A number of multiple-choice questions taken from GATE, IES and Civil Services are included in the appendix. Divided in 12 chapters the book broadly deals with the following: fundamentals of mechanics stress and strain of materials body behaviour of material under axial loading normal stress, axial strain, simple tension test, shear stress and strain, and strain energy under impact load analysis of two-dimensional stresses, stresses at a point, Mohr's circle for plane stress and general stress system at a point stress-strain relation of three-dimensional body, plane stress and plane strain, relation between elastic constants and theories of elastic failure applications of stress and strain in practical problems analysis of thin and thick pressure vessels behaviour of solid and hollow prismatic shaft under torsion bending of simple beams, bending moment and shear force diagram Castigliano's method bending normal and shear stresses of beams for different cross sections, unsymmetrical bending of beam buckling of columns for simple columns for different end conditions.…
