Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Dust Jacket Included. 1st Edition. First US edition. Cloth and boards with dust jacket. Fine copy in very good dust jacket. Wood engraving of myrtle by Reynolds Stone on the sectional title pages and the same image blind-stamped on the front board, a nice subtle touch. Jacket for the American edition de…signed by Jules Madoff. Jacket is tanned in a strip at the top of the back panel, front panel has a short tear at the top left corner next to the spine and a few nicks along the top edge. "A virile and colloquial rendering . . . The only complete modern translation . . . " from the front of the dust jacket. Bilingual edition, Latin and English in facing pages. A very readable, unstilted translation. With notes, a biography of Ovid, and commentary on his own translation by Lee. Ovid was frankly lustful and, in modern parlance, a player, with little of the begging coyness of the love poetry of English poets like Andrew Marvell.
