Outcault (1863-1928) arbeitete seit 1895 für verschiedene amerik. Tageszeitungen. "1897 ging O. dann zum "New York Herald" des Verlegers J. G. Bennett, brachte dort 1901 "Pore Li'l Mose and Buddy Tucker" und im Mai 1902 den Bildstreifen "Buster Brown" heraus. Im Gegensatz zu der frechen sozial-anklägerischen Jungenfigur "Yellow Kid" (die Outcault am 7. 7. 1895 zum ersten Mal auftreten ließ) ist "Buster Brown" der hübsch frisierte und gut gekleidete Lausejunge der wohlhabenden amerikanischen Mittelschicht. Seine Aufgabe ist es, zusammen mit seiner sprechenden Bulldogge Tige seine Leser durch naive Streiche zu unterhalten. Ab 1906 erschien "Buster Brown" im "American Humorist", einer Unterhaltungsbeilage des "New York Journal", zu dem O. zurückgekehrt war. "Buster Brown" wurde im "Herald" in einer veränderten Version weitergeführt und in verschiedenen Fassungen bis zum Ersten Weltkrieg gezeichnet. Ebenfalls 1906 veröffentlichte O. eine Biographie des "Buster" in Prosaform und 1908 bis 1913 sechs weitere Bücher mit dieser Hauptfigur. . "Buster Brown", der Junge im Samtanzug, beeinflußte in Amerika Kindermoden, Spielzeugindustrie, Whisky-, Schuh- und Zigarettenwerbung und seine Werbungsprodukte füllten das "Buster Brown-Museum" in New York" (W. Their travels take them to a ranch, a tannery, the cotton mills, a lumber camp, a coal mine, the Buster Brown Shoe Factory, the iron mills, a farm, a flour mill, a paper mill and a gold mine; each page features a full color drawing of the traveling trio at one of these locations, along with a four-line poem about the industry being visited; the fourth line of each poem is invariably "The Buster Brown Blue Ribbon Shoe." If one were to suspect that this book was just one long cute advertisement for Buster Brown Blue Ribbon Shoes, one would be correct. The condition of the book is NEAR FINE.
