First edition of Anthony Jansen's adaptation (1626-1699) of Otto van Veen's (1556-1629) emblemata based on the odes and moral verses of Horace, printed with parallel texts in Latin, Dutch, and French. A highly elaborate and intellectually ambitious emblem book.The present work contains 103 engraved emblems, each carefully constructed according to a multilingual scheme, a Latin motto engraved within the plate, a French poem beneath the image, facing quotations from classical authors (frequently Horace), a Dutch motto accompanied by an 8-line poem, and further French headings with hexametrical verses. Each emblem thus forms a densely layered moral and literary composition, designed to operate simultaneously on textual, visual, and interpretative levels.The present work reflects Van Veen's mature emblematic theory, in which image and text are deliberately interdependent. As he himself argued, visual representation has a superior didactic force, echoing Horace's Ars Poetica (ut pictura poesis), and the notion that what is seen more powerfully affects the mind than what is merely heard or read. Each emblem is therefore conceived as a carefully balanced unity of pictura and poesis, intended both to instruct and to delight.The plates are attributed to a group of leading engravers including Cornelis Boel (ca. 1576-1621), Cornelis Galle the Elder (1576-1650) and Pieter de Jode the Elder (1570-1634), all prominent practitioners within the Antwerp and broader Southern Netherlandish engraving tradition. The printer, Justus Danckerts (1635-1701), belonged to the distinguished Amsterdam family of mapmakers and engravers. The Danckerts workshop played a significant role in the production and dissemination of engraved books and atlases throughout the late 17th century.The edges and corners of the boards are scuffed, the joints are weakened, but the structural integrity of the binding is still intact, the front and back boards are somewhat scratched, with two circular scratch marks on the front. Loeimans and A. Seil after van Veen. Contemporary parchment-laced vellum case binding, manuscript labeling to spine. Jansen added a preface as an aide to interpreting the emblems, and to the page facing each emblem one of his poems in both Dutch and French and a quotation in Latin from Horace. The emblems for this edition were newly engraved at Amsterdam, most in reverse after van Venn's originals, using various techniques to enhance the nuanced play of light and dark. Van Veen was among the most important Dutch emblematists of the seventeenth-century, as well as Antwerp's leading artist and dean of the painters' guild of St. Luke. Rare first edition of this famous emblem book by Dutch poet Anthoni Jansen, based on the Antwerp 1607 Latin text edition of Otto van Veen's enduringly popular Quinti Horatii Flacci Emblemata, illustrating the poems of Horace, with verses in Dutch, Latin, and French. This emblematical work by Van Veen constituted a significant development in the design and conceptualization of emblem books as well as the optimization of their didactic impact. By transposing the works of the Roman poet Horace into innovative images through prints of a high technical quality the work could be used for philosophical and moral meditation. Van Veen was a painter, draughtsman and humanist, primarily active in Antwerp and Brussels. He is known for his paintings of religious and mythological scenes, allegories and portraits, which he produced in his large workshop in Antwerp, where from 1594 or 1595 to 1598 he was amongst others the teacher of Peter Paul Rubens and proved himself influential as an educated humanist artist (doctor pictus) on Rubens.
