Leatherbound. Zustand: Good. Sixth Edition, corrected. 459, 113 p. 20 cm. Frontispiece portrait. Half leather with marbled boards. Matching endpapers, gilt fore-edge. Some rubbing to edges of spine, corners bumped. Owner's signature on front endpaper. Label residue on front pastedown. According to Oldham's biographer, Thompson, "his person was tall and thin, which was much owing to a consumptive complaint, but was greatly increased by study; his face was long, his nose prominent, his aspect unpromising, but satire was in his eye." While in "original" satire Oldham cannot be said to have reached the height to which he hoped to climb, he is memorable in our poetic literature as one of the predecessors of Pope in the "imitative" or adapting species of satirical and didactic verse. Oldham's productions deserve more notice than they have received. Pope, and perhaps other of our chief eighteenth-century poets, were under important literary obligations to this author. (DNB.).

Hardcover. Zustand: Good. No Jacket. 2nd Edition. Incomplete (final pages 135-148 missing). Otherwise the major bulk of the text is present. A much owned copy. The frontispage has various previous owner annotations - that of a Thomas Williamson, dated 1740; other annotations by him are scattered throughout the book (mostly practising his handwriting!). The Other Pieces are: "The Passion of Byblis in Ovid's Metamorphosis Imitated in English" printed for Jo. Hindmarsh 1682; "A Satyr Upon a Woman, who by her Falshood and Scorn was the Death of his Friend"; "Some New Pieces Never before Publisht - By the Author of the Satyrs upon the Jesuits" - Printed by MC for Jo. Hindmarsh, at the Black Bull in Cornhil, 1681: "Horace His Art of Poetry, Imitated in English. Full leather. Most antique in appearance. The boards are much worn, scratched, scuffed, marked all about from handling and shelving and age. Blind stamped decoration. The boards, despite their antiquity, are steady and comfortable. The contents are much aged. The early pages are much worn about the edges. The pages are marked by hand, use, the years throughout. They have user wear about the edges. Nonetheless all of this provides the most agreeable character to the book. The pages are clear, bold, confident, comfortable, certain, still keen. A venerable book. fk. Our orders are shipped using tracked courier delivery services.

Ownership inscription to front free endpaper, "Henry Milner's book given me by my Brother in Law John Martindale in the Year of our Lord 1743." Second inscription on title page, "Gil[lan]by Hall". Interior clean throughout, lightly tanned pages. The esteemed poet John Oldham was born in Gloucestershire in 1653. In the 1670s, his poetry circulated in manuscript form, gaining acclaim amongst elite circles. His first substantial volume, however, was Satyrs Upon the Jesuits, of which this is the second edition (Oxford DNB). The work was prompted by the infamous Popish Plot, a conspiracy that wracked the city of London with fears of a Jesuit insurrection. During the height of the Plot (which years later was revealed to be entirely fabricated), anti-Catholic sentiment ran high. In Satyrs Upon the Jesuits, Oldham's biting satire lampoons Jesuits for their murderous, treacherous ways. Paul Hammond writes, "They are robust, vigorous work, rough in versification, coarse in vocabulary, and unsparing in their vilification of Catholic beliefs. They demonstrate Oldham's mastery of the couplet forms, and his continuing interest in heroic satirical modes." (Oxford DNB) Although Satyrs Upon the Jesuits is his most well-known work, Oldham's other works were more edifying, of which are included in this volume. In 1683, Oldham died of smallpox, at the young age of 30. EPIGRAPH to the final work reads (in part): Assist ye nasty Powers To describe him thorowout; I'll dip my pen in Turd, And write upon a shitten Clout. (Tartaret, de modo Cacandi. p.9).
