Sequeira was born in Aldgate. In the years following his service in the London Regiment during the First World War, he acted in Shakespeare at the Old Vic, and he would continue as an actor into the age of film and television. In addition to acting Sequeira taught (including a youthful Peter Cushing) at Guildhall School of Music… and Drama, painted, and in 1953 published a book on stage make-up. The present four items, all undated, are in good condition, lightly aged. ONE: Autograph duologue titled 'Seeing the Coronation'. 5pp., foolscap 8vo. With revised conclusion, 1p., 12mo. The six leaves pinned together. The five foolscap leaves carry duplicated pages of another dialogue on their other sides. A humorous interchange between 'Alice' and an increasingly-hysterical 'Maud', in the London crowd to see Queen Elizabeth II's 1953 coronation procession. TWO: Duplicated typed dialogue titled, 'A Quiet Day's Sketching in Sussex'. 4pp., 4to. On four leaves. Sewn into makeshift brown paper wraps, with the following on the cover: 'A Quiet Day's Sketching in Sussex | Horace Sequeira | 5 Belsize Crescent | Hampstead N.W 3 | Miss G. Russell'. At head of first page: 'The Characters are two artists, Miss Vandyke Brown and Miss Rose Madder (Both very arty).' THREE: Printed price-list of 'Original Monologues, Duologues and Sketches by Horace Sequeira | May be obtained from 17, Welbeck Mansions, Inglewood Road, N.W.6 | Phone: HAMpstead 0968'. 4pp., 4to. Bifolium. With addendum slip. Prices are given for numerous monologues and duologues, as well as sketches, 'Farcical Sketches' and 'A Costume Thriller'. With notes and details relating to arrangements for performance. Presumably produced for students of acting (there is a reference to 'Elocution Teachers'). Some of the sketches require pianos and telephones as props ('Telephones are made to order price 10/6 (this does not include bell).') ONE: On letterhead of 'The Ben Greet Company', addressed from 20 Buckingham Street, WC [ London ]. 14 July [ no year ]. 2pp., 8vo. In fair condition, aged and worn, with the first page carrying pencil scorings and a short note by Forsyth. The first paragraph reads: 'If business will permit can I have one of the small boxes for M…onday night. You generally let me have something during the Season. I've been a very regular Gallery & Amphitheatre and stallite this season.' He continues: 'You've got a genius in Frau , & you sd keep her. Everyone is raving about her. I saw her as K last Bayreuth & I've heard her every night since she's sung here except Thursday when I unfortunately had some Pastorals at Ramsgate.' He realises that there is not likely to be 'an off night', but if there is, he should like a seat, adding: 'Please remember I am an ardent opera goer'. He ends with some illuminating comments on the state of Covent Garden, thanking him for having 'those shutters opened the difference was marvellous', and expressing a wish that 'the Syndicate wd only remove the awful spangles of fire or "electrify" them & back the 2/6 gallery'. These changes would be welcomed by 'their grateful public'. He concludes: 'Dont laugh at my managerial requirements!' TWO: 2 The Terrace, Camden Square. 17 August [no year]. 2pp., 12mo. In good condition, lightly aged and worn. Headed with recipient's name: 'Neil Forsyth Esq'. Having just returned from America, he asks to be presented with four seats for that night: 'I want much to hear "Armida". If full up, never mind & I'm glad.' He announces that he is 'going to produce shortly in Chicago almost the earliest known opera one of Cesti's, circ 1606 [sic], Musical and Dramatic.' The letter concludes, referring to America: 'Things out there are very very faddy the Covent Garden Opera season seems to go on very steadily'.

See her entry in the Oxford DNB. The three TLsS (Items One to Three), each signed 'Lilian Baylis', are all 1p, 4to. They are in fair condition, creased and lightly aged, with Item Three having two punch holes for a binder. The portrait postcard is in good condition, lightly aged. ONE: TLS, 15 November 1921. Addressed to 'Miss In…gham'. 'I do hope you will have a big success with the enclosed card. We are up against a huge thing, and we will need the help of all our friends to see us through.' With regard to Miss Ingham's 'inquiries about my health', she writes: 'I returned to England yesterday, but I wish I could say I was really well, although I am better than I was when I went away.' She was interested in the recipient's 'account of the Poultry Farm'. Concludes: 'I feel that we both need to pray earnestly for courage just now, as rats and lack of finance both need a lot of fighting, and nothing but pluck and perseverance will make either of our fights successful.' TWO: TLS, 30 March 1932. Exhibiting something of the 'legendary' bluntness' referenced in her DNB entry. Reads: 'Dear Mr. Bull, / Mr. Williams and I are pleased that you have enjoyed your season here, and we have discussed the possibility of your returning. / As far as we can see at present we shall not have anything to offer you, and I would certainly look for work elsewhere. Should anything unexpected happen we could always get in touch with you.' THREE: TLS, 17 October 1936. She thanks 'Madame Hands' for her letter. 'We cannot hear Mr. Rudding at present, as we have nothing to offer him', but will keep his letter on file. 'Each post brings us scores of applications for the three companies, so you will understand why we often have to appear ruthless!' She concludes in autograph, 'We hold auditions in April & on to June, the work of 2 Theatres & 3 Companies is so great. / I wish I could do as you ask at once. / Yours sincerely / Lilian Baylis'. FOUR: Post Card with black and white photographic portrait by 'Raphel' of 'Lilian Baylis C.H. M.A. OXON. HON. / Lessee and manager of the Old Vic, and Sadlers Wells.', in academic gown. With autograph signature at top left, 'Yours sincerely / Lilian Baylis'. Dated on reverse, possibly by Baylis, 'Mar. 14th. 1934.'.
