Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. James A. Maitland (illustrator). Please see photos for condition details. Hardcover, maroon cloth boards with gilt on front and spine. Exterior shows some scuffing and soiling along with edge and corner bumps/light wear. The internal binding is good, no hinge cracks although there is some very light pulling present on a few spots of the text pages. The front end page shows some initials in the upper corner written in pencil and the opposite side as the signature of the original owner (in pen). No other markings noted in the book, no bookplates, nothing torn or loose. The pages do show scattered foxing and spotting, with a dark spot on the first page in the lower outside corner. The spot, roughly the size of a quarter, may be from a droplet of coffee or ink and has faint are spots present on the second page as well. There is no publication date, ca.1866, which is based on the publisher's advertisements in the back which promotes the upcoming 1867 Peterson's Magazine.
