September 15, '69. Hans." The recipient of this book, Colonel Truman Smith, helped Speidel translate his first book, Invasion 1944: Rommel and the Normandy Campaign. Smith served as an army intelligence officer, focused on Germany in the 1920s and 1930s. He served as a US Army military attaché in Berlin from 1935-1939, returning to Washington as a special advisor to General George C. Marshall. General Hans Speidel was a German general and influential politician in post-World War II Western Germany. During the war he was Field Marshal Erwin Rommel's chief of staff. He participated in the notorious July 20th assassination plot against Hitler, being the only major member of the plot to survive the war. After the war he was influential in the development of the Bundeswehr (Federal Defense Forces) of Germany. He was instrumental in Western Germany joining NATO in the 1950s. Speidel died in 1984. In den WarenkorbFolio (215 x 275 mm). 1 p. With the letterhead of Mohamed El-Chafai Bomboatman, a stamp dealer in Port Said. Four stamps pasted down, and handwritten signed note. An extraordinary document presenting examples of four stamps designed by T. E. Lawrence for the Arab Revolt, sent directly to His Majesty King George V, who has noted in his own hand: "These stamps are the new issue since the Sherif of Mecca has been on our side", signed simply "Geo". Reportedly, George V (an avid stamp collector) received around 400 Hijaz stamps. - What Lawrence and George V would have both understood was that postage stamps were a useful political tool. As Oriental Secretary at the Arab Bureau, Sir Ronald Storrs (1881-1955), wrote in his memoirs: "Shortly after the Arab Revolution we found that its success was being denied or blanketed by Enemy Press (which was of course quoted by neutrals), and we decided that the best proof that it had taken place would be provided by an issue of Hajaz postage stamps, which would carry the Arab propaganda" (quoted in Beech). Storrs also described how he "wandered with Lawrence round the Arab Museum in Cairo collecting suitable motifs in order that the design in wording, spirit and ornament, might be as far as possible representative and reminiscent of a purely Arab source of inspiration. Pictures and views were avoided, for these never formed part of Arab decoration, and are foreign to its art: so also was European lettering" (Beech). - T. E. Lawrence himself mentioned the stamps in a letter to his brothers in July 1916, excited by the prospect of design and paying special attention to a scheme to use flavoured gum on the back, which involved strawberry essence on the red stamps and pineapple juice on the green stamps. Both red and green are in fact represented here, though with their flavour untested. - The final designs were in fact the work of two men, neither of them Lawrence himself. First, Agumi Effendi Ali, who designed the ¼ piastre stamp (seen in green) and the ½ piastre stamp (seen in red), which David Beech states were inspired by the carved panels on the principal door of the al-Salih Talayi Mosque in Cairo and by the last page of a Holy Qur'an in the 14th century Mosque of Sultan Barquq, respectively. Second, Mustafa Effendi Ghozlan, who designed the 1 piastre stamp (seen in blue), inspired by "an ancient prayer niche in the Mosque of al-Amri at Qus in Upper Egypt" (Beech). This particular collection also includes an orange stamp, interestingly, noted as worth 1/10 piastre. - "Perhaps without this philatelic connection Lawrence might never have become 'Lawrence of Arabia'. For it was on this, his first visit to the Hijaz, that he met one of the sons of King Husayn of Hijaz, Emir Faysal (1885-1933) who was to become successively Commander of the Northern Army in the Arab Revolt 1916-1918, King of Syria from 1918 until 1920 when he was deposed by the French, and finally King of Iraq 1921-1933" (Beech). - A small closed tear, but a fine survival. - David R. Beech, "Hejaz: The First Postage Stamps of 1916 and T E Lawrence", in: The London Philatelist 114 (205), 323-327.

4to. 1½ pp. To the politician Ernest Thurtle, acknowledging his success in abolishing the British Army's death penalty to punish crimes such as desertion or cowardice: "Then the Lords gave me a fright. Lord Allenby too, whom I like and admire. Surely if I had been in London, able to see him, he would at least have kept silence - if not supported you. Yet doesn't it make you surer you were right, to see all the General Staff opposing you? In the end you downed the Lords, as you had downed the Government. I feel it is a blessed victory. The old state of law hurt me. It was such a damnable judgement upon our own flesh & blood [.] I haven't really said thank you for all you did: because I feel that it was only your duty really. People who care anything at all about their countries don't like to see them fouling themselves [.]". - After over 300 British soldiers had been executed by firing squad following brief trials during World War I, Thurtle had first introduced his measure for the law's abolition in 1924. - A few small marginal tears to the folds.

In den WarenkorbVarious sizes (folio, 4to, 8vo). A total of 460 typescript and 177 manuscript pp. (9 of which comprise merely 2 lines) in 26 fascicles, assembled as 11 portfolios. With a few newspaper clippings as well as 1 photograph each of Hagia Sophia and the gate of Dolmabahce Palace, mounted on cardboard as postcards. A highly important and extensive archive from the secret personal papers of General Auguste Sarrou, France's chief spymaster in the Levant and Turkey during the critical period between 1917 and 1923, when the Near and Middle East were completely re-ordered following the demise of the Ottoman Empire. It features numerous "top secret" spy reports, correspondence and dossiers of political analysis, providing stellar insights into France's central role in shaping the destiny of Syria, Lebanon and Turkey, working to counteract the forces unleashed by Lawrence of Arabia during the Arab Revolt. - The present archive consists of dozens of classified intelligence reports, political masterplans and field notes. Most of the documents are typescripts or carbon copies of typescripts (many written by Sarrou), intended for distribution amongst only the most senior French military and political officials. The documents span Sarrou's entire career, dating from 1908 to the 1960s, although the bulk of the documents concern the critical period from 1917 to 1923. It includes a typescript copy of Sarrou's autobiography, written at the end of his 60-year-long career in espionage and diplomacy in Turkey, the Balkans and the Middle East; a series of papers relating to Sarrou's time serving as a gendarme in Macedonia in the decade prior to World War I, when he notably befriended many leaders of "Young Turks"; and a further series of papers outline his secret "Mission d'Orient", a grand operation to support French ambitions in Syria, Lebanon and Anatolia. Furthermore, a series of highly important and secret analytical reports written by Sarrou provide a "game plan" for how France was to rule Syria and Lebanon (importantly, the Quay d'Orsay largely followed Sarrou's advice as matters unfolded). Notable is Sarrou's brutally unflattering assessment of Emir Faisal, Lawrence of Arabia's old comrade. Additionally, there is an intriguing manuscript report of a meeting held between Arab intellectuals and Djemal Pasha, the Ottoman War Minister, the day before the fall of Damascus, as well as a series of fascinating reports concerning the 1921 attempt on the life of General Henri Gouraud, the French High Commissioner for Syria and Lebanon. Another series of 25 typescript "Secret" intelligence reports compiled by the Service des informations de la Marine dans le Levant (S.I.L.) in Port Said in 1918 and 1919 contain fascinating raw field intelligence on Anti-French elements throughout the Middle East, as well as the efforts of French assets to counteract these forces through counterespionage and propaganda. A diverse collection of typescript and manuscript research documents, as well as correspondence from key assets, assembled by Sarrou from 1919 to 1922, is supplemented by a series of highly insightful typescript reports, written by Sarrou to advise the French government on the situation in Turkey from 1921 to 1931, covering the rise of Atatürk's new republic and French efforts to gain influence in Ankara. Finally, there is a collection of letters, documents and postcards from Sarrou's mid to later career, from the late 1920s until his retirement in the mid-1960s. - Many of the elements of the present archive are likely unique survivors, while a couple examples of some of the typescripts may exist in various French official archives. A detailed list is available upon request.
