Hardcover. Zustand: Very good+. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: No Dj as Issued. Odd Nerdrum (illustrator). First Edition. 64pp. Brown cloth boards, b&w image on front board, silver titles on spine and front board. Binding tight, spine straight, corners square.Light, two inch dampstain on the rear panel, Pages faintly toned at extremities but otherwise clean and unmarked. Images remain bright and crisp. Calling himself an "historical anarchist", Norwegian artist Odd Nerdrum has rejected the modernist development in art of the past 100 years. Embracing the traditional values and techniques of the old masters, particularly Rembrandt and Caravaggio, Nerdrum creates a mythic Nordic world of barren landscapes populated with what appear to be lonely survivors of a lost civilization. His constant theme is that of estrangement -- of man from the world, from his fellows, from himself. Nerdrum repeatedly portrays a longing for reconciliation that can only be described as religious in intensity.A dual strangeness pervades these graphic works. Executed for the most part between 1985 and 1993, they reveal a desolate view of the human situation which the sumptuousness of their execution subtly contradicts. This coupling of a forlorn vision with a paradoxical faith in technical virtuosity and artistic tradition stems from his rejection of modernism, both as a style and as a progressive creed. Size: Square 10" x 10". Book.

Per Lundgren studerade för Nerdrum 1983-4 och hade sin första separatutställning 1996. - - - (Amos Anderson Art Museum Publications, new series no. 28.) - - - Norwegian artist Odd Nerdrum (born 1944) was a student at the Academy of Art in Oslo when modernism first made its delayed entry to Norway. He broke away from his peers who rallied around Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, and become a follower of Rembrandt and a painter in the classical tradition. Art students from all over the world have since sought out his teachings, and many have become internationally known in their own rights. Per Lundgren studied for Nerdrum in 1983-4 and had his firs separate exhibition in 1996.

This is the first book to discuss KITSCH - with sympathy. Though the art world once conceived of kitsch as a threat, Nerdrum argues that the kitsch of today aspires to become an alternative to art - not as a domineering concept - but as an enrichment together with art, and as a means for artists and art critics to find an expression which expands our culture. , , Year2001, Illust.
