In den WarenkorbPaper, 24 x 14cm, edges frayed not affecting text, sl. grubby, tipped on to sl. larger paper. Text (secretarial): "Received June the 8th. 1764 the contents of the Within order [not present] || Witness John Dupont". Signed "Bolingbroke". Note: "Bully," as he was called by his contemporaries, is best known for his extravagant life…style and the racehorses he bred. On 8 September 1757 he married Lady Diana Spencer,[4] elder daughter of Charles Spencer, 3rd Duke of Marlborough, after making a joking proposal to her in one of London's pleasure gardens. Bolingbroke's insistence on maintaining a bachelor's lifestyle (which included lavish spending, a string of mistresses, heavy drinking and gambling) after their marriage, coupled with verbal and, possibly, physical spousal abuse, led to a bitter separation between Bully and the popular and artistic Lady Diana. Bolingbroke brought divorce proceedings against his wife for her criminal conversation with Topham Beauclerk, with whom she bore a child. The Bolingbroke divorce is notable for being streamlined compared to similar proceedings and thus is credited with easing the way for noble divorces in the 19th century.".

In den WarenkorbThe claim that Benjamin Jowett reported Senior as saying that 'the famine of 1848 in Ireland would not kill more than a million people, and that would scarcely be enough to do much good' appears to have been made up by Cecil Woodham-Smith. It is certainly not mentioned in Senior's entry in the Oxford DNB, along with the entry fo…r the recipient Lady (Maria) Theresa Lewis (1803-1865), who lived in Kent House in Knightsbridge with her second husband Sir George Cornewall Lewis, Bart, her first husband having been the novelist Thomas Henry Lister (1800-1842). The present item is a 12.5 x 8 cm envelope. In good condition, lightly aged. The front panel has the signature 'N W Senior' at bottom left, with the address centred as usual: 'The / Lady Theresa Lewis / Kent House'. On the reverse the back flap has been carefully torn open, leaving a the red-wax seal intact, but sadly without any impression. See Image.

In den WarenkorbSee his entry in the Oxford DNB. 3pp, 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged, with thin neat strip from windowpane mount adhering to edges. Folded twice for postage. Twenty-four hands of text in secretary hand, addressed to 'W. A. Lock Esqre', and signed in autograph 'Sir C Trevelyan'. He thanks him for his 'very intere…sting Letter', and hopes he will 'never think it necessary to make any excuse for writing to me [other such?]'. He has asked 'Mr. Farr' for 'any observations he might have to offer on the early part of it; and his answer is enclosed' (not present). The following paragraph reads, possibly with regard to women's suffrage: 'What are we to do with our "monstrous Regiment" of Women? Is there any remedy short of polygamy?' He turns to the subject of 'German Immigrants', on which he has an unusual view: 'what are we but improved Germans? We are Germans disciplined & trained by the Normans, and by a long enjoyment of free institutions & of a maritime & Colonial System'. See image.

In den Warenkorb4pp., 8vo. Bifolium. In very good condition, lightly-aged. Neatly placed with a windowpane mount onto a leaf of cream paper. Writing within a year of his demise, D'Orsay begins by defending himself to his attorney: 'My Dear Du Pasquier | You received my letter yesterday about Mousley. I could not act otherwise, and even I have n…o right to complain when a man is losing more than 5000 by me, to find fault that he did not send me £1300. I am astonished that you are so severe. I am sorry that you will not give your assistance in this affair. Do as you like. I said to Mousley that I would not act without you, now you release me of my word, I have written to him that I will sign the Deed when he chooses.' He now turns to 'Simonnet', who has drawn a cheque on Pasquier without notice, as he is 'embarrassed in his affairs'. Regarding a 'difference in the account' he explains: 'You do not calculate, the Models, of the Queen, and the Wellington and Lions, which are still in his hands, and which are belonging to you, when you call for them.' The 'Second Wellington' has arrived at the custom house and is 'much better, according to your taste, as it is done au R and you are wrong not to take it, as I am sure the Duke would take one. - The head is admirable. ' he asks if Pasquier 'had the Reins & & of the Queen changed by Matifal. You ought if it is not done. - The End of all this, will be that I will be obliged to buy all these things you refuse from Simonnet - Thats Comfortable for me!!' The letter continues with a reference to 'Reid's business', 'Davis' and 'Ford': 'Yes they can annoy me here, not arresting my person, but make Trials, and possibly obtain judgment to sell my Effects, and if one English Creditor begun, [sic] there is no reason why others would not go on.' He consequently asks him to do all he can 'with Morel'. He concludes with a reference to a 'Nephew' who is 'in London to bring me back the powder'.
