In den WarenkorbSoftcover. Zustand: g+ to vg+. First editions thus. Small octavos. Nine separate titles of the scarce "First Series" of "The Hogarth Essays". All are housed in a custom-made red 3/4 morocco over red silk clamshell box with gilt lettering on the spine that reads. "The Hogarth Essays. Nineteen Authors. The Hogarth Press. 1924-1926…." These are pamphlets ranging in length from 24 to 48 pages, with woodcut covers printed in either black or green on card stock wrappers. Our surmise is that a previous owner had the box made with the intent of acquiring all 19 of the essays, but only succeeded in collecting 9 of them (still, a worthy task awaiting completion). Of these 9 already present, two are of the scarcest and most expensive titles: Theodora Bosanquet's "Henry James at Work"; and Leonard Woolf's, "Fear and Politics, A Debate at the Zoo." All the issues were hand printed by Virginia and Leonard Woolf at The Hogarth Press and are being offered as a group, along with the clamshell box. Clamshell box with some light rubbing to extremities and some staining to the spine. Some of the individual softcovers with some rubbing, stains and/or light age toning to wrappers. Interiors of some issues with minor to light sporadic foxing, often confined to the margins. All individual issues protected in plastic sleeves. Issues in good+ to very good+, box in very good- condition overall. The issues offered are: III. Bosanquet, Theodora. Henry James at Work. IV. Eliot, T. S. Homage to John Dryden. V. Dobree, Bonamy. Histriophone. VI. Read, Herbert. In Retreat. VII. Woolf, Leonard. Fear and Politics. VIII. Graves, Robert. Contemporary Techniques of Poetry. XI. Sitwell, Edith. Poetry & Criticism. XII. Forster, E. M. An Enquiry. XV. Waley, Hubert. The Revival of Aesthetics.

He also chaired the board of the London-based South Australian Colonisation Commission created by the South Australia Act 1834 to oversee the new c…olony of South Australia, before the colony went bankrupt and he was sacked in 1841. He was chiefly known for championing the cause for emigration to the new colony, and his name lives on in Adelaide's main river, the Torrens, the suburb of Torrensville and a few other places [Wikipedia]; B. "In 1831, having impressed John Stuart Mill, Robert Torrens and other leading economists with the value of his ideas, Wakefield became involved in various schemes to promote the colonisation of South Australia. He believed that many of the social problems in Britain were caused by overpopulation, and he saw emigration to the colonies as a useful safety valve. He set out to design a colonisation scheme with a workable combination of labourers, artisans and capital. The scheme was to be financed by the sale of land to the capitalists who would thereby support the other classes of emigrants. It took several attempts before the Province of South Australia was established. Although initially, Wakefield was a driving force, he found that as it came closer to fruition, he was allowed less and less influence, until he was frozen out almost completely, whereupon he took offence and severed his connections with the scheme [Wikipedia]."; C. "Wakefield " is considered a key figure in the establishment of the colonies of South Australia and New Zealand" [Wikipedia]. See Image.
