Zustand: Very good. Early edition of this all-in-one manual for educating young children according to Froebel's system of creative play and self-directed interaction with the world. Education through play had its modern roots in the work of Rousseau, Richard Lovell Edgeworth, and Maria Edgeworth in the late 18th-century. These writers advocated for an active approach to education: letting children touch, play, and invent, rather than only passive listening and rote memorization. In the US, Maria Montessori's and Friedrich Froebel's schools of thought would go on to become the most influential. Froebel created the first kindergarten in 1837 (and also coined the word). In this "children's garden," young students learned about the world through hands-on interaction. By the 1860s, the kindergarten movement came to the United States, where it had a "widespread influence" (Ogata) thanks to the efforts of Elizabeth Peabody. This book, first published in 1888, puts the latest pedagogical practices into the hands of parents who were home schooling their children, providing a comprehensive overview of Froebel's system. 8.25'' x 6.75''. Original red pictorial cloth stamped in black and gilt. Yellow patterned endpapers. Illustrated in black and white. 534 pages. Boards rather worn with a few ink marks and faint stains. Hinges cracked, a bit shaken, but holding. Leaves uniformly toned.
