Two parts in one volume. Reissue under a new title of the celebrated auction catalogue of the library of Nicolas Heinsius (1620-1681), one of the greatest Dutch classical scholars, Neo-Latin poets, and diplomats of the seventeenth century. Containing almost 13,000 lots, it was the first work printed by Abraham Elzevier (1592-1652) at Leiden. The present work includes the letterpress dedication "Typographus lectori salutem" bound between the title-page and the first leaf of the catalogue. The original edition, published for the auction held on 15 March 1683, was immediately recognised as a work of lasting scholarly importance rather than a mere ephemeral sale catalogue. It was therefore reissued with a new title-page, omitting the date and details of the auction and incorporating the Elzevier printer's device. The catalogue quickly became an essential bibliographical reference work, in 1691, for example, Johann Georg Graevius (1632-1703) used it as a textbook for his lectures on bibliography at the University of Utrecht. The library of Nicolas Heinsius (1620-1681) was the finest private collection of classical texts and works on antiquity assembled in Europe up to that time. The auction catalogue describes 12,761 lots, and the sale realised the exceptional sum of 23,833 florins. The collection covered a remarkably broad range of subjects, including theology, law, medicine, mathematics, philosophy, history, literature, and works relating to Italy, France, and military affairs, as well as a section devoted to incomplete books. With the bookplate "Ex Bibl. Suteri", a shelf label at the foot of the spine, and a few contemporary manuscript annotations on the front flyleaf. The binding shows light rubbing and the title-page is somewhat stained. Otherwise in good condition.l Bibliography. Its history and development. (Grolier club, 1984), 80; Blogie IV, col. 4; Jöcher II, 1457; Breslauer-Folter 80; Hofman Peerlkamp, p. 426; Pollard-Ehrman 241-242; cf. on Nicolas Heinsius in general, see F.F. Blok, Nicolas Heinsius (Ph.D. 1947); Blok, Isaac Vossius (2000). Contemporary marbled calf, spine gilt in compartments with red morocco title-label, red edges. With the title page printed in red and black, and a woodcut printer's device. Pages: [2], 374, [2 blank]; 286, [2 blank] pp.…

A PRICED PRESENTATION COPY. Son of the eminent classical scholar Daniel Heinsius and book scout for the Queen of Sweden, Nicholas built this fine library of medieval and Renaissance manuscripts, incunables, books on vellum and classical texts annotated in manuscript by, i.a., his father, Gronovius, Junius and J.J. Scaliger. With some 20,000 volumes, this auction catalog also functioned as "almost a universal short-title catalogue" (Sibbald) and became "one of the most frequently consulted catalogues of its kind" (Breslauer & Folter). The lots are divided into twelve subject areas, then internally arranged by size. Heinsius' nephew J.G. van Absmade (d. 1690) gave this copy to David Knibbe (1639-1701), the Leiden pastor and prolific author, who recorded the gift on the front flyleaf. In good condition (lightly browned, some quires more so, one natural paper flaw neatly repaired). Sibbald, "The Heinsiana" in Documenting the Early Modern Book World edd. Walsby & Constantinidou 141-59; Breslauer & Folter, Bibliography: Its History & Development 80; Pollard & Ehrman, Distribution of Books by Catalogue pp. 241-2 ("issue iii") & no. 231; Willems, Les Elzevier 925. Contemporary blind-ruled vellum over stiff paper boards (lightly soiled), later gilt-lettered red (title) and green spine labels, edges sprinkled red. …

Couverture rigide. | [ENGLISH DESCRIPTION FOLLOWS] Rare first French edition, illustrated with 2 frontispieces (the same repeated) and 12 attractive unsigned figures. Translation by the author himself. The novel was not reprinted until 1801 under another title. Title pages in red and black. Contemporary full brown grained calf bindings. Raised band spines decorated. Red morocco title labels and tan morocco volume labels. Lacks at head and to upper joint at head of volume II. 5 corners slightly bumped. A slight tear to the last compartment at foot of volume II. Trace of dampstain to upper right corner of several leaves at beginning of volume I. Good copy. Picaresque novel recounting the vicissitudes of a rogue's existence in service to several masters, bourgeois and noble. Satire is never far away and humor often ribald, painting a biting portrait of contemporary society. The character's incredible adventures unfold between Holland and principally France. The author seems to have read 17th-century Spanish and French picaresque novels, one even recognizes the influence of Don Quixote in the fact that the hero knows love and bravery only through chivalric romances, which leads him into comical situations. As the novel progresses, events become intertwined and characters reappear, thus creating a narrative thread. Nicolas Heinsius is the son of an illustrious lineage of men of letters, Nicolas Heinsius, his father, and Daniel Heinsius, his grandfather. His novel amply deserves to be rediscovered and take its place among the finest examples of picaresque literature. * (10) 448pp. et (8) 480pp.…
