First edition, inscribed by the illustrator; 4to; 12 full-page colour lithographs after original woodblocks, minor foxing to endpapers, else unmarked internally; original brown paper-covered boards, colour lithograph to upper cover showing illustration for The Bus Driver, plain tan cloth spine, red edges, edges of boards rubbed and bumped, spine worn; housed in felt-lined clamshell box, marbled paper boards, black calf spine, lettered in gilt. Inscribed on the front pastedown by Nicholson to the daughter, and her second husband, of his mistress and housekeeper Marie Laquelle; 'For Georgette and Norman Holder with love from W. N. who did the pictures. London. Xmas. 1916'. 'From about 1910 until he remarried in 1919, Nicholson's housekeeper Marie Laquelle, whose real name was Adà le Marie Schwarz, nà e Schiestel, was also his mistress. Nicholson painted her several times, first as Carlina in 1909; he also painted her daughter Georgette and her second husband Norman Holder' (The Art of William Nicholson, 2004).

First (Library) edition, one of 275 copies(?); 4to; printed on Japanese vellum, toned, publisher's colour lithographed device to title, 12 full-page colour lithographed illustrations by Nicholson with captions, some offsetting, otherwise very good; publisher's pictorial paper-covered boards, rubbed at extremities, browned, minor soiling, small chip to fore-edge of upper board, otherwise very good-plus. A wonderful example of this book, in an edition thought to run to two hundred & seventy-five copies. From the library of James Younger, a member of the Younger brewing family. Nicholson had been working with Heinemann since the mid-1890s. As well as designing their windmill device, Nicholson created a number of books for Heinemann, including London Types (1898) and The Square Book of Animals (1899). Kipling's short verses here complement the illustrations perfectly, though he opted out of collaborating on Nicholson's Square Book of Animals, complaining in a letter to the publishers 'All Nicholson's animals are practically extinct in Great Britain, their places being supplied by New Zealand Lamb; Argentine Beef. The only way I tried it, my verses became so deeply political (not to say protectionist) that I stopped.'.

First (Library) edition; 4to; printed on Japanese vellum, publisher's device to title, 12 full-page colour lithographed illustrations by Nicholson; publisher's variant binding vellum-backed pictorial vellum boards, spotted and toned, slightly splayed; accompanied by an envelope of related ephemera. The rare special issue of Nicholson's London Types, in an uncommon variant vellum binding. The Bus Driver was omitted from this edition and only appears in a simplified form on the front cover. The London types featuring in this edition are: Guardsman (The Horse Guards), Hawker (Kensington), Beef-Eater (The Tower), Sandwich-Man (Trafalgar Square), Coster (Hammersmith), Lady (Rotten Row), Bluecoat Boy (Newgate Street), Policeman (Constitution Hill), News-Boy (The City), Drum-Major (Wimbledon Common), Flower Girl (Any Corner), and a Barmaid (Any Bar). Nicholson had been working with Heinemann since the mid-1890s. As well as designing their windmill device, Nicholson created a number of books for Heinemann, including An Almanac of twelve Sports (1898) and The Square Book of Animals (1899). The accompanying 'Quatorzains' in this work are by the poet, critic & literary editor W.E. Henley, best remembered today for his poetic evocation of Victorian stoicism 'Invictus', written in 1875.
