The 'young Gentleman' to whom Griffiths refers is, he states, 'Grandson to the Celebrated Dr. Doddridge', and he and the recipient of the letter may be 'useful to each other', if the latter has 'occasion for such an Assistant'. Doddridge's grandson would appear to be John Doddridge Humphreys (b.1760) of Tewkesbury, whose son of the same name edited Doddridge's works. Docketed in a contemporary hand at the head of the page 'Griffiths R'. The engraving of 'Ralph Griffiths, LLD' by '[William] Ridley sc' (taken from the European Magazine, 1803) is 9.5 x 13 cm, laid down on a paper mount. It is in fair condition, on lightly aged paper. The Griffiths papers are in the Bodleian Library, Oxford.
