Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Ex-library copy is in excellent condition. A monumental, two-volume monograph written by the American ethologist and ornithologist Margaret Morse Nice. Published originally as volumes IV (1937) and VI (1943) of the Transactions of the Linnaean Society of New York, this pioneering work revolutionized avian biology and field ethology by replacing the era of specimen collection with intensive, data-driven observations of live, individual birds. • Volume I: A Population Study of the Song Sparrow (1937): Focuses heavily on the vital statistics, population dynamics, nesting biology, migration, and survival rates of the species. • Volume II: The Behavior of the Song Sparrow and Other Passerines (1943): Expands into the development of young birds, social behavior, territory defense, pair formation, and the complexities of passerine song. Konrad Lorenz lauded it as a major methodological breakthrough for long-term field research on wild populations. Journals like The Emu and The Wilson Bulletin also commended her pioneering use of colored leg bands to track hundreds of individual sparrows. These two volumes have been rebound together in hardcover - see image.…
