La historia de Leyli y Majnún representa una de las cumbres de la literatura en lengua persa. Dos jóvenes de tribus enfrentadas entre sí se enamoran nada más verse; sin embargo, la imposibilidad de alcanzar el amor de la amada convierte al amante en un loco (majnun) que reniega de la vida en sociedad y se retira para honrar las excelencias del amor y de su amada. La versión castellana de M. Kangarani conserva la versificación original, reproduce la forma poética de Nezamí y las características de la lengua farsí. Esta joya literaria se ha revelado desde antiguo como fuente de inspiración tanto en Oriente como en Occidente; incluso puede considerarse el Romeo y Julieta de los desiertos arábigos. Hakim Nezamí Ganjaví (Ganjav / Azerbaiján, 1141-1204) es uno de los principales autores del Siglo de Oro persa y el mayor poeta lírico de la literatura iraní.

It may even be considered as a kind of Romeo and Juliet born in the Arabian dessert.
