Reprint (Golden Library edition). xi, 264pp. Francis de Sales (1567-1622) was a Bishop of Geneva and is revered as a saint in the Catholic Church. He was noted for his deep faith and his gentle approach to the religious divisions in his land resulting from the Protestant Reformation. He is known also for his writings on the topic of spiritual direction and spiritual formation. His Introduction to the Devout Life was first published in 1609, and his final edition was published in 1619, prior to the death of Francis in 1622. It enjoyed wide popularity, and was well received in both Protestant and Catholic circles. It is typically categorized as a form of reading known as lectio divina ("divine reading"), based on the Christian monastic practice of spiritual reading. The present translation, in contemporary English, is from the 1619 publication as established by Dom B. Mackay in the Annecy edition published in 1893. The book is bound in the original black (probably bonded leather) boards with gold titling on the spine. It is in excellent condition and the contents are tight and clean with no inscription. The unclipped dustwrapper has some shelf wear with light soiling and the front corners are bumped.
