In den Warenkorb8vo, pp. [xvii], 519, [20] table; a very nice copy in contemporary limp vellum, endpapers probably later but certainly not modern. Bookplate of E.G. Stanley. Editio princeps of the chronicle of William of Newburgh (1135/6-98?), who was probably born in or near Bridlington on the Yorkshire coast, and spent his life at the Augustinian priory of Newburgh, near Coxwold. This is an important work, one of the masterpieces of English historical writing of its time. William was dismissive of the 'impudent fabrications' of Geoffrey of Monmouth, and balanced in the most important English state affair of his lifetime, the dispute between church and crown which ended in Thomas Becket's murder in 1170. Although he appears not to have travelled very far from his monastic house, William was possessed of a clear Latin style and had some knowledge of classical authors such as Horace and Virgil. He was also well informed - most especially about English affairs, of course - although much of his specific information was taken from other chronicles: the principal value of the earlier part of his work lies in his acute judgment and impartiality. The book was probably the product of the last years of William's life, and seems to have been left unfinished at his death. Not many early manuscripts of William's chronicle survive, and this first edition is a handsome little book. It is dedicated to Elizabeth I by the publisher, who does not say who edited the text or from which manuscript it is derived. A curiosity of this book is the fact that it is printed with odd-numbered pages on the versos, and even numbers on the rectos. I have occasionally seen this happen in short books, but when lengthy texts like this are involved, the typesetters almost always revert at some point to standard practice - one can well imagine that it would come so naturally to them to have an odd-numbered page as the first in each signature that it would be hard to resist correcting the 'error' at some point in the more than five hundred pages. Shaaber W104; Adams W187. Provenance: Eric Gerald Stanley (1923-2018), Rawlinson & Bosworth Professor of Anglo-Saxon at Oxford from 1977 to 1991, with his collation note showing that he bought it in 1976.
