Vielmehr entstand aus ihrer Zusammenarbeit einer der bedeutendsten Beiträge zur Wirtschaftstheorie im 20. Jahrhundert: Mit der "Theory of Games and Economic Behavior" (1944) schufen sie die Grundlage für die ökonomische Anwendung der Spieltheorie. Erstmals war es damit gelungen, eine Theorie über interaktives Verhalten in ein Modell zu gießen.
