The Inquiry of Ugra (Ugrapariprccha) is one of the most influential Mahayana Sutras preserved and transmitted in both India and China over many centuries and actively quoted in treatises on the Bodhisattva Path. It is nevertheless one of the most neglected texts in Western treatments of Buddhism. The Ugra appears to be one of the earliest Bodhisattva scriptures to come down to us and as such it offers a particularly valuable window on the process by which the Bodhisattva path came to be seen as a distinct vocational alternative within certain Indian Buddhist communities. The Bodhisattva Path is a study and translation of the Ugra that will fundamentally alter previous perceptions of the way in which Mahayana was viewed and practiced by its earliest adherents. To achieve a better understanding of the universe of ideas activities and institutional structures within which early self proclaimed Bodhisattvas lived the author first considers the Ugra as a literary document employing new methodological tools to examine the genre to which it belongs the age of its extant versions and their relationships to one another. She goes on to challenge the dominant notions that the Mahayana emerged as a reform of earlier Buddhism and offered lay people an easier option. On the contrary the picture that emerges is of the early Mahayana as a more difficult and demanding vocation initially limited to a small contingent of monastic males. Condition: Very good condition, laid to card, some old tears to margins only and slight water stain bottom right. This print is from a copper engraving made in 1710 by Jean Audran from a drawing by Jean Marc Nattier, which was itself based upon a portrait of Rubens painted by Anthony van Dyck. The print was published as a plate in La Galerie du Palais du Luxembourg, peinte part Rubens, dessin e par le Sr. Nattier, Paris. 1710. Van Dyck (1599-1641) joined the Antwerp studio of the renowned painter Rubens when he was just 19, but already a Master of the Antwerp Guild. I have not discovered when this portrait was made, to what extent Nattier embellished it, or whether it still exists. I am also not sure what the date of this particular impression is but it is certainly antique, unlikely to be later than c1800.…

Paneled spine with a black label and gilt ornamentation. Spine has a loss of leather to the head and tail edges, significant chipping throughout, impacting the legibility of the label, and cracking to joints. Boards have bumping to corners (primarily to the rear bottom fore corner), the leather is tearing and beginning to separate from the board along the front bottom fore corner, moderate chipping to edges, rubbing wear and discoloration to surfaces, and cracking to leather throughout. Textblock has an archival repair to the bottom corner of the first double spread plate [leaf 16], a small ink drawing to leaf [23], minor splitting to the gutter throughout, occasional closed tears and wear to edges [not impacting illustrations], light foxing to some pages, and age toning throughout. Some plates have tissue guards present. Contains a loose engraved plate reproduction of the painting "The Denial of Saint Peter" originally by Gerard Seghers laid in along the rear free end pages (c. 17th century). Text in French.
