During cold weather, preparations are made to protect the concrete; enclosures, windbreaks, portable heaters, insulated forms, and blankets are used to maintain the concrete temperature. As an alternative, antifreeze additives can be used in cold weather. These chemical additives suppress the freezing point of water under 0 °C degrees and accelerate the hydration of cement. The effects of antifreeze admixtures are often specific to certain cement brands and fine aggregates. It is important therefore to determine through laboratory mix trials both the operating range and the particular dosage of the admixture required for the intended application. The most common antifreeze admixtures are sodium nitrite (NaNO2) and potassium carbonate (K2CO3). Neuware -This study presents a comparative study between Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and Response Surface Methodology (RSM) in predicting the compressive strength of high strength concrete. The comparison was made based on the same experimental datasets. The inputs investigated in this study were percentage of Cement, Silica fume and coarse aggregate. The methods employed in ANN and RSM were feedforward neural network and face-centered central composite, correspondingly. The comparison between the two models showed that RSM performed better than ANN with coefficient of determination (R2) closer to 1 with 0.9959. In addition, all the predicted results by RSM against the experimental results fell within 10% margin. For ANN model, however, three of its predicted results were outside the 10% margin. The consumption of cement is very high.so there is a chance to decrease the usage of cement by replacing it with fly ash up to certain proportions. This investigation is to study the effects of replacement of cement (by weight) with four percentage of fly ash and the effects of addition of steel strip pieces in partial replacement of coarse aggregate. A control mixture of proportions 1:1.5:3 with w/c of 0.45 was designed. Cement was replaced with three percentages (15%, 30%&45%) of Class F fly ash. Three percentages of steel strip pieces (5%,10%&15%) were used. This study reports the feasibility of use of waste steel strip pieces and their effect due to variation in structural properties such as cylinder compressive strength, split tensile strength, water Absorption, Moisture Migration& Evaporation Test in concrete.
