Narahara Ikko made this series in the United States between 1970 and 1974 when he was rethinking his approach to photography. Many photographs were taken in 1972 as he drove from the East Coast to the West, writing in his notes: 'While we were driving across the flat Arizona desert, we felt as though we had been thrown out from the earth and thrust into another planetâ¦. The landscape surrounding us there in the desert was ancient, but to be so informed of the age of something in geological terms is somewhat meaningless. For when one personally experiences the image, it is something altogether different and new as though it were just born. And so it was for us.' The final image, the only colour photograph in the book, shows the 1972 Apollo 17 launch from Kennedy Space Center in Florida. He was moved by the mystical cityscape that suddenly appeared on water as it was illumined by the headlights of the boat on which he had arrived. He remained fascinated by Venice and returned on his way back to New York after traveling the Aegean Sea by boat in 1973. The origins of the city on water, by which it is isolated from the world, and the canals that run throughout to create a complex cityscape, intensified life in Venice. As a result, the city is colored strongly by its residents. For Narahara, who had been staying in New York and shooting various parts of the U.S. between 1970 and 1974, has written, "In contrast to the U.S., the nation closest to outer space, Venice was a city closest to humanity." Venice was even more appealing than before, and he continued to adore, and frequently revisited the city after moving back to Tokyo. Published by Kyuryudo in Tokyo in 1969, the book records Narahara's encounters with Spain during the summers of 1962 and 1963, bringing together bullfighting, street life, religious and popular celebrations, landscapes and rural communities. The work is divided into three sections, Grand Tarde, Fiesta and Vaya Con Dios, each presenting a different aspect of the country and its people. Narahara approaches Spain from the perspective of an outsider, but his photographs are remarkably intimate. Rather than producing a conventional travel document, he constructs a deeply personal vision of a country experienced through contrasts: spectacle and solitude, violence and tenderness, tradition and everyday life. The gravure reproductions give the photographs an extraordinary density, while the numerous fold-out plates create a particularly immersive reading experience. The book is also notable for its ambitious physical construction. The first edition consists of two volumes, accompanied by the separate booklet The Promised Journey, with Japanese and English texts. The complete publication was issued with its original slipcase and outer protective cardboard box. This is a particularly desirable first edition copy, signed by Ikko Narahara. It retains both original slipcases, the original transparent acetate dust jacket and the accompanying booklet A Promised Journey to Spain. The preservation of these original components makes the copy especially complete and faithful to the way the publication was originally issued. España Grand Tarde, Fiesta, Vaya Con Dios is an essential work within Narahara's career and a landmark in Japanese photography.
