Hardcover. Zustand: New. India has produced some of the world s greatest religious leaders, sages, saints, philosophers, and spiritual thinkers. They were monks, nuns, and renunciates, nationalists, and reformers. No one religion had a Monopoly on them. They range from Mahavira and Buddha, who lived over 2, 500 years ago, to medieval saints like Chishti, avvaiyar, and Guru Nanak, to more recent philosophers and religious icons such as Vivekananda, Ramakrishna, saint Teresa, and many others. The spiritual and philosophical heritage they left behind is India s gift to all Indians and the world. In the life lessons series we publish the essential teachings of some of India s best-known spiritual teachers, along with commentaries and biographical notes. Each book will be a handy companion to help the reader along the difficult pathways of life. Swami Vivekananda was a nineteenth-century philosopher, monk, and nationalist. Born Narendranath data into an aristocratic Bengali Kayastha family of Calcutta, he showed a strong inclination towards spirituality from a young age. Initially influenced by Brahman samaji ideas, he later came into contact with Western esotericism. He then became a disciple of the acclaimed mystic Swami Ramakrishna who introduced him to Advaita Vedanta. Vivekananda went on to become a proponent of Vedanta and yoga, which he famously introduced to the world at the Parliament of the world s religions in Chicago in 1893. Vivekananda set up the monastic Ramakrishna order after the death of his Guru. He then left the monastery and led the life of a wandering ascetic, travelling through the subcontinent, filled with the desire to reconcile and assimilate modern scientific processes with ancient Hindu ideals. Also credited with raising interfaith awareness, Swami Vivekananda preached the philosophy of neo-vedanta advaita which reconciled the different paths to liberation. He revived Hinduism in India and contributed to nascent nationalistic thought. His view of Patriotism was not parochial, thus garnering him universal respect and admiration. An accomplished orator, writer, and poet, as well as a philosopher, his teachings remain just as relevant today as they were when he first Thunder his message to his countrymen and the world over a century ago. Edited by nanditha Krishna, believe in yourself brings together Swami Vivekananda core teachings.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. The Buddha (563483 bce), also known as Siddhartha Gautama, was one of the greatest philosophers of the world. He was born a prince of the Shakya clan of Kapilavastu in present-day Nepal in sixth century bce. While leading a life of luxury and comfort, he was shocked to see the universality of suffering. He renounced his family, rank, and material possessions at the age of twenty-nine to search for deliverance from old age, illness, and death. He led the life of an ascetic for many years and attained enlightenment at the age of thirty-five and became the Buddha. He believed that desire and ignorance lie at the root of suffering. As a spiritual teacher, the Buddha developed a pragmatic middle path. He preached selflessness, non-violence, righteousness, and right living to liberate the soul from an endless cycle of birth, death, and rebirth in order to attain salvation or Nirvana. He did not speak of gods or rituals and preached a non-theistic way of life. The Buddha's teachingsmainly the Eightfold Path and the Four Noble Truthsform the basis of the Buddhist tradition and are followed by people across the world.

A great believer in the equality of all, he be>Ordained men and women from all Classes and castes. He taught his followers how to overthrow the fetters of karma and liberate the soul from the cycle of birth and rebirth as well as lessons on how to live a life of truthfulness, compassion, humility and non-attachment. The Upanishad dictum-ahimsa paramo dharmah (non-violence is the greatest truth)-saw its apogee in the teachings of Mahavira. Hardcover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. Adi Shankara was one of the greatest philosophers of India. Probably born in the eighth century CE in modern Kerala, he established the doctrine of Advaita Vedanta and unified the six main schools of Hinduism. He travelled across the Indian subcontinent from Kanyakumari in the south to Kashmir in the north and Dwarka in the west to Puri in the east propagating his philosophy through debates and discourses, establishing monasteries and monastic orders. He participated in philosophical debates with orthodox schools of Hinduism and heterodox traditions. He established several mathas or monasteries, inspired by the ancient ashramas (hermitages), all over the country, which have ensured the continuity of his teachings. By the time he died at the age of thirty-two, he had produced a cornucopia of commentaries on ancient Indian texts as well as original philosophical works which contain some of the greatest gems of human thought on the concept of oneness with the supreme being, caste and equality, meditation, knowledge, self-realization, moksha, pride, attachment, Maya and much more. Edited by (No Suggestions) Krishna, the aphorisms in 'you are the supreme light' are culled from his greatest teachings and provide lessons on how to lead a fulfilling life. They are as relevant today as they were when Shankara first expounded his philosophy centuries ago.
