Role of language in the identity formation of Central Asia. 6. Role of ethnic factors in the development of multi layered identities in Central Asia. 7. Perestroika Glasnost and the change in Central Asia. 8. Quest for identity continues conclusion. Bibliography. Endnotes. Index. Marxist ideology and ethnic identities are usually counterpoised in the mainstream literature. No where has the mutual dynamics and interactions between these two forces been more profound and innovative than in the Soviet Central Asia. This book offers a lucid explanation of this volatile and little understood phenomenon. Dueling Isms concerns the events of Post Soviet Central Asia and on the inter ethnic relations in the Eurasian region where initially after the Soviet disintegration there was a nationalising impulse that threatened the internal harmony of the multi ethnic societies. The book shows how the Soviet Union tried to accommodate national ethnic religious linguistic and regional identities as long as they did not clash with Soviet identity. The work reveals the mechanisms through which the Soviet system even encouraged some of these identities such as the linguistic identity of the Tajiks though these identities had their relative spheres of influences and were subservient to the larger Soviet identity. The book draws attention to the difficulties involved in consolidating national identities in the post Soviet period. Given the centrality of ethnic and Islamist impulses of contemporary times the book is sure to raise curiosity for any one interested in the history and sociology of Soviet Central Asia. 292 pp.

Appendices. Index. Gora: A Critical Companion situates Rabindranath Tagore's iconic text in his times and ours, examining contexts that produced it and reasons that make it acutely relevant today. A Critical Companion revisits this foundational text from perspectives as varied and interdisciplinary as textual and genre studies; translation and reception studies; narratology, gender, race and caste studies. It situates Gora within spacio-imaginative configurations such as nation, desh, rashtra, mulk, swadeshi samaj, swaraj, ramrajya, and as engaging with questions of hospitality, philoxenos and xenophobia. It provides new readings with regard to the complex operations of religion and 'formations of the secular' in times of colonial modernity. A Critical Companion is distinctive in providing a translation of Tagore's essay Atmaparichay and Buddhadev Bose's Bangla essay on Gora. It provides a valuable critical support to contemporary readers that approach Tagore from disparate cultural backgrounds, and encourages them to revisit Gora to discover new meanings for these times.

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. This volume is the latest English language translation of Trailokyanath Mukhopadhay's story about Kankabati, a little girl in nineteenth century Bengal's Kusumghati. It is textured with annotations, and with graphics that accompanied the original edition. Publicized originally as a modern fairy tale, this story tells of Kankabati's dreams of a series of adventures in bizarre places and situations. She visits an underwater kingdom of fishes; delves into dense forests and mysterious caves where ghouls like Nakeshwari reside; and ventures out into the skies astride a khokkosh carrier, to the domain of a sick moon and his quarrelsome family. The narrative also dwells on Kankabati's and Khetu's love for each other in face of death, dishonour and all earthly enticements. While Kankabati is truly riveting as a fantasy, with meaningless quarrels, endless plotting, serio-comic villains, and unexpected wellsprings of generosity it is also enjoyable as a graphic description of village life in fin-de-siecle Bengal.

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: New. Strange Familiarities traces epistolary traditions produced within the ethnolinguistic cultures of nineteenth-century Bengal and the North-West Provinces in colonial India. The book provides a close reading of texts and English translations of epistolary literature, selected due to their novelty and radical responses to the 'postal revolution' of the time. Through the study of epistolarities, the book also directs the reader's attention towards cultural histories, especially the conceptual complexity of the 'subcontinent'. Trained as we are to see 'the subcontinent' through a post-Partition nationalist lens, and as a composite of distinct, bordered entities, this renders us less inclined to consider subcontinental cultures in terms of their interconnected histories. The book, thus, not only serves as a reader of nineteenth and early twentieth-century epistolary texts, it also acts as an archive and provides a glimpse into aspects of cultural history.
