Thus, once a conflict in question is resolved, some groups tend to either directly or indirectly oppose the outcomes of the peace agreements or unilateral win by one of the adversarial groups. By giving examples on how the UN, IMF, World Bank has assisted not only in ensuring that peace exists but also at the forefront in rebuilding the capacities of the weakened populations to enhance the infrastructure and subsequently come up with ways to ensure a sustained economy.

Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Seminar paper from the year 2016 in the subject Communications - Media and Politics, Politic Communications, grade: A, University of Nairobi (Institute of Diplomacy and International Studies), course: MA International Conflict Management, language: E…nglish, abstract: The rising Ethnic politics in Kenya have been in the rise are instigated by politicians as was the case in the PEV 2008. These conflicts tend to transcend the state borders to regional and international levels thus the involvement in resolution by the external bodies like the UN, AU, EAC, IGAD among others. These negotiations and mediations may seek to understand the underlying issues, dynamics and effects experienced in the conflicts. This essay will thus seek to address the social, economic, political, religion and security as mobilizing factors of ethno politics, the consequences, and challenges of the 2008/9 post- election violence and how to transform ethnic conflicts in Kenya. The problems resulting from the 2008/9 PEV are highlighted as well as proposals with regard to institutional, legislative, social policies and reforms to better handle the necessary transformation. The theory of ethnicity is based on primordial and instrumentalist approaches. Kenya witnessed ethnicity and political conflicts in 1992, 1997/8, 2007/8, all of which came after the coming of multi-party politics, which exacerbated ethnic competition for power and resources. Domestic conflicts are believed to ''involve deep issues of ethnic and cultural identity, of recognition, and of participation that are usually denied to ethnic minorities, in addition to other values that are not negotiable.'' Compromise is more difficult under these conditions because groups often cannot find common ground. Kenyan politics is strongly divided along ethnic lines. Parties are found to draw their support from distinct and separated ethnic groups. President Kibaki's Party of National Unity (PNU) was mainly supported by the Kikuyu, Embu and Meru ethnic group. The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), which combined several opposition groups headed by Raila Odinga, was supported by Luo, Luhya and Kalenjin ethnic group. As a consequence, more Kenyans value ethnicity above political ideology and policy. The perception that the party offers the best hope for a person within the 'ascribed' tribe to assume power and consequently share state resources with tribal members. The result of this view has historically been tribalism or prejudice across tribes, and favoritism within the tribe. An analysis of the 2007 general election in Kenya describes the voting pattern as a mere 'ethnic census'.

It is important to conduct this study now because the present and projected demographic and geographic changes point to a future of continued: (a) rapid urbanization in developing countries - like the EAC - and (b) escalation in the number of urban disasters. Document review and descriptive research will be used in the study with a sample size of 104 participants being selected from the cities of Dar es Salaam, Nairobi, Kampala, Kigali, and Mombasa. The collected data will be tested for inter-rater reliability, triangulated and instruments checked for content validity. Both measures of central tendency and measures of variability about the mean will be performed on the collected data.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Presentation / Essay (Pre-University) from the year 2017 in the subject Geography / Earth Science - Demographics, Urban Management, Planning, , language: English, abstract: Electricity is an integral part of human society; it drives sociotechnical an…d economic developments while wielding the ability to destroy human society - without it, life comes to a grinding halt, while a slight excess of the same can lead to the wanton destruction of valuable property and loss of lives. It is the quality of electricity that determines whether electricity will sustain or destroy property and life. Most Kenyans have at one point or another experienced a power disruption of some sort; with those who have yet to, probably being among the many Kenyans who either still depend on biomass (e.g. firewood, charcoal and agricultural wastes) or use it as a substitute for expensive electricity. These include rural communities, the urban poor, and the informal sector. This study focuses on Kisumu's electricity distribution network for several reasons but mainly so because 1) it is one of the city's most critical infrastructures that often gets affected whenever disasters, both acute and chronic, strike and 2) the effects emanating from all manners of electricity disruptions, be they planned or unplanned, often have the adverse effect of affecting, both directly and indirectly, the physical, environmental, social, and economic aspects of the city and Kenya at large. The overall objective of this research is to generate empirical findings that establish the resilience of Kisumu city to electric disruptions and how this can be enhanced. Thus, in order to realize this objective, the following primary research question is posed: How can the resilience of Kisumu city to electricity disruptions be enhanced To answer this question, a mixed methods case study research design of an exploratory nature will be adopted.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Project Report from the year 2015 in the subject Urban and Regional Planning, grade: 1, University of Nairobi (School of Continuing and Distance Education), course: Masters of Arts in Project Planning and Management (MAPPM), language: English, abstra…ct: The purpose of the study was to establish how certain factors influence public participation in urban planning projects. These factors were: public awareness, degree of accessibility, and one's financial situation. The study was conducted in Nairobi Central Ward. Nairobi was preferred because it recently adopted a new master plan: Nairobi Integrated Urban Development Master Plan (NIUPLAN) which was said to have been developed through a consultative process. The objectives of the study were to establish how: public awareness, degree of accessibility, and financial situation influenced public participation in urban planning projects. The study is significant in the sense that by exploring some of the factors that might influence public participation in urban planning, urban planners can come up with remedial approaches which would ensure that their future planning activities are more inclusive, pro-poor and hence sustainable. The study used cross-sectional survey research design. A sample size of 375 participants was selected from a population of 13,325 inhabitants within Nairobi Central Ward. This sample was divided equally into three regional clusters: City Square; Muthurwa; and Nairobi Central sub-locations found in Nairobi Central Ward. Up to 333 participants returned the 375 self-administered questionnaires making up for a response rate of 88.80%.Analyses of test-retest reliability gave an index of 0.79. A correlational analysis performed on the collected data established that there was a very weak relationship between public awareness and participation in urban planning projects but there was no relationship between degree of accessibility and public participation in urban planning projects. It was also established that there exists a weak positive correlation between a person's financial situation (income, expenditure and savings) and their participation in urban planning projects.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2017 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Peace and Conflict Studies, Security, grade: A, , language: English, abstract: Terrorism is a common contemporary phenomenon and no nation, great or not, can b…oast of being free of, or immune to, it. The only thing which distinguished States, on matters terrorism, is their degree of susceptibility to terror attacks i.e. the frequency with which they experience terrorism and the impact/severity of these experiences. All of us have experienced terrorism, be it directly or indirectly, and so know a thing or two on this is important, even if only for engaging in constructive deliberations on the subject. The project seeks to establish whether Kenya is a terror hotbed, or not; and If it is, then why or rather, what makes it one; but on the other hand, if it is not, then what is it and better yet, why is it not. I intend to accomplish this fete by conducting a critical study of terrorism in Kenya, a first for the nation if I may add.Unlike traditional methods of studying terrorism, critical terrorism studies is a research orientation that is willing to challenge dominant knowledge and understandings of terrorism, is sensitive to the politics of labeling in the terrorism field, is transparent about its own values and political standpoints, adheres to a set of responsible research ethics, and is committed to a broadly defined notion of emancipation.By adhering to the two most essential epistemological perspectives of critical terrorism studies i.e. critical realism and reflectivism, the project makes references to historical sources, relies on facts, and analyzes hard data in a bid to reveal the underlying socio-economic and political realities, within seemingly neutral knowledge, that have long informed acts of terrorism in Kenya.
