Erstausgabe

Leather. Zustand: Good Only. None (illustrator). An uncommon, early English language edition of Louis-Balthazar Neel's work of French military history. Two volumes, as called for. ESTC reference No: T7620. With a half-title to volume I only. Bookplate to the front pastedown of volume I, Robert J Hayhurst. Stamp to the title page of both volumes, Morden College. Robert J Hayhurst was a keen collector of eighteenth century literature. He inherited the retail pharmacies, John Hayhurst and Son, based in Nelson, Lancashire. This work of military history focuses on Maurice the Count of Saxony. He was the son of Augustus II the Strong, King of Poland and Elector of Saxony. It looks at his life and military campaigns, and paints a wider picture of the Wars of Europe since the Treaty of Utrecht. There are details of several battles and sieges that the Count of Saxony commanded or assisted such as Prague, Aschaffenburg, Fontenoy, Lawfeldt, and Bergen-op-Zoom. Saxony was known for his deeds in the War of Austrian Succession and for his victory at the Battle of Fontenoy. In uniform calf bindings. Externally, very smart. Front hinge and joint to volume I is weak, and held by one cord only. May detach without careful handling. Small loss to the head and tail of spines. Bookplate to the front pastedown of volume I. Internally, both volumes are firmly bound. Pages are bright. Just the odd spot. Good Only. book.

xxvj, 118, [2], 120 pp.The French author Louis-Balthazar Néel published in 1752 his satirical Voyage de Paris à Saint-Cloud par mer et retour de Saint-Cloud à Paris par terre; a story that simultaneously mocked the genre of travel literature and the people of Paris and its environs.Néel takes his reader on an imaginary journey from Paris to Saint-Cloud, about 15 kilometers from the centre of Paris, upstream on the Seine. The work is a bitter satire of Parisian life in the eighteenth century. The hero of the story and citizen of Paris receives an invitation to a country house in Saint-Cloud. To him, covering the short distance requires the outmost preparations. He buys himself a geographical map, a compass and a gun to prepare for all eventualities. He even takes the time to write his will and pays his outstanding debts. The journey on the wild and rough sea he professes to traverse is in reality the relatively calm Seine. His Voyage de Paris à Saint-Cloud was his most notable publication that underwent several re-editions throughout his lifetime and thereafter.Good condition, some tearing on the binding and spine.l BNF 33999536.
