Carlo Musitano (Castrovillar, 1635 - Nápoles 1714) fue médico y sacerdote; además de esta obra, publicó estudios sobre las enfermedades venéreas y sobr…e las enfermedades de las mujeres. Esta obra salió en latín en Colonia Allobrogum (Ginebra) en 1698, con otra edición en Lyon el mismo año. De esta primera edición española WorldCat solamente recoge el ejemplar de la BNE, y un T. II suelto en la bilioteca de la Universidad de California en Los Angeles. El CCPB recoge otros 3 ejemplares, y REBIUN otro. Solamente la BNE y la Universidad de Navarra parecen poseer los cuatro tomos de la obra, y, con la excepción de la UN, ninguno menciona la lámina incluida en este ejemplar. Este es un libro, a pesar de su estado un tanto irregular, excepcionalmente raro. Encuadernación parcialmente suelta; portada algo manoseada por los márgenes. En algunas breves secciones hay pequeñas galerías de polilla marginal que también se adentra en el texto; son picaduras pequeñas, que apenas se notan (hemos incluido fotos de las hojas más afectadas). Los peores defectos del libro son de la edición en sí - una descuidada impresión, como si el impresor no supiera, o no se hubiera molestado en sacar unas hojas limpias, impresas con una adecuada entintado. Esta pobreza de impresión - en otros libros acompañado por una mala calidad de papel, que en este libro no está mal - es realmente común en los im presos españoles de gran parte del s. XVII y la primera parte del XVIII, reflejo fiel, del estado del país, su política y su monarquía. Pergamino de época, con el título rotulado.

Musitano (1635 ? 1714), is regarded as being one of the most important Italian physicians of the seventeenth century and his works were reissued several times and translated into both French and German. Musitano was both a priest and a physician which made him many enemies who, under the pretext of "indecency", tried to prevent him from practicing medicine. However, Pope Clement IX, acknowledging Musitano's merit, granted him permission to continue his medical practice.

Aus dem Lateinischen übersetzet". "Unter den der ganzen Gynäkologie gewidmeten Werken sei zunächst dasjenige von Carlo Musitano (geb. in Castro-Villari (Calabria citeriore) 3.Jan. 1635 - starb 1714 in Neapel) erwähnt. Er war von Beruf Priester, übte (mit päpstlicher Erlaubniss) aber gleichzeitig die ärztliche Thätigkeit in Neapel (mit grossem Erfolg), und zwar unentgeltlich aus. Er war ein eifriger Verfechter der Harvey'schen Kreislauflehre und Iatrochemiker. Dementsprechend spielt die Fermentation und die Evacuation der angeblich aus flüchtigen Salzen bestehenden Unreinlichkeiten des Blutes eine grosse Rolle in seinen Schriften. Das Kapitel über die Unfruchtbarkeit ist ungeachtet der Versicherung des Verfassers, keusche Ohren nicht verletzen zu wollen, und seines Hinweises auf sein eigenes Cölibat vielleicht das ausführlichste und raffinierteste, was wir an Ratschlägen zur Anregung der Wollust in medizinischen Schriften finden. Er rät im Falle der Unfruchtbarkeit nicht nur obscöne Unterhaltungen der Eheleute miteinander und die Betrachtung sich gattender Tieren, sondern giebt sogar den Rat, der Mann solle mit hübschen unzüchtigen Mädchen, die Frau mit schönen ausgelassenen Jünglingen tändeln, um dann mit dem Ehemanne den fruchtbaren Coitus auszuführen. Für diesen werden dann ausführlichste Vorschriften angegeben, die in einer entschiedenen Empfehlung des Coitus a tergo gipfeln." R.
