Vintage publicity photograph of director Tim Burton from the 1989 film. Richard Donner directed the highly successful superhero film "Superman" (starring Christopher Reeves) in 1978, but it was Burton's dark and semiserious anti-hero take on the DC Comic character "Batman" that would be repeatedly emulated over the next three decades, and is largely responsible for the modern day superhero film genre. "Batman" spawned three direct sequels "Batman Returns" (1989), "Batman Forever" (1995), and "Batman and Robin" (1997). Joel Schumacher took over directing the franchise after "Batman Returns," and replaced Michael Keaton's Batman with Val Kilmer and George Clooney, respectively. Director Christopher Nolan would resurrect the franchise in the highly successful "Dark Knight Trilogy" ("Batman Begins" [2005], "The Dark Knight" [2008], and "The Dark Knight Rises" [2012]) with Christian Bale in the lead. Several more films have since been spawned from the DC Comic's character universe as well as another pending re-invention ("The Batman") to be directed by Matt Reeves, with Robert Pattinson in the lead, for 2022. Winner of an Academy Award. Set in Gotham City, shot on location in Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, and London, England. 8 x 10 inches. Near Fine.

Vintage color reference photograph from the 1995 film, showing Elizabeth Berkley as Nomi, onstage in her early days at Cheetah's Gentleman's Club, mid-striptease. Annotations in manuscript ink on the verso. One of the most hotly contested films of the 1990s. Largely panned at the time of its release, it has since gained enormous cult status, and has even been reevaluated by critics and filmmakers such as Jonathan Rosenbaum, Jim Hoberman, Jim Jarmusch, and Jacques Rivette, who defend the film as a serious satire, something actor Kyle MacLachlan dismisses, describing the film as ".horrible. Horrible!" and noting that "it just gets worse" as it progresses. John Waters may have described it best: "'Showgirls' is funny, stupid, dirty, and filled with cinematic cliches; in other words, perfect." Set and shot on location in Las Vegas, Nevada. 10 x 8 inches. About Fine.
