2 issues. 24 and 48pp. Stiff paper wrappers. Well preserved, near fine copies. Wrapper design by Dorothy Colles and Heather Child. First editions, all issued. CO-EDITOR AND CONTRIBUTOR DEREK STANFORD'S COPIES, WITH HIS SIGNATURE TO BOTH FRONT WRAPPERS. Founded by Muriel Spark in 1949 after her departure from Poetry Review, where she was editor, Forum ran for precisely two issues. Spark's loftily prescriptive mission statement in the first issue may have inadvertently identified the problem: 'The gradual disappearance of the narrative poem, to our mind makes it the more important that a narrative prose style, more imaginative and energetic, should develop. We hope to encourage the short story writer to liberate his mind from preconceptions of form, style and subject, believing as we do, that whatever traditional influences are authoritative and vital, will in any case persist. [.] Of the readers, we would ask their tolerance and open-minded interest, and remind them that the success of this magazine will depend upon the support of subscribers.' Forum folded after only two issues, its subscriber list never having made it into three figures. Spark's close friend Derek Stanford, was a contributor to the first issue, and took up joint editing duties with Spark for the second, he assigned to the poetry and her to the prose. Other contributors included Dannie Abse, Roy Campbell, Henry Treece, Kathleen Raine, Hugo Manning (another close friend) and Denys Val Baker. A scarce twosome, published seven years before the appearance of Spark's first novel, and from the library of her collaborator on the short-lived project. Scarce, and with impeccable provenance.

Erstausgabe
Zustand: Very Good. First Edition. Wraps. 8vos. Two issues of this rare magazine , all published . Each 24 pp. The intro to issue 2 says "In accordance with the policy of FORUM announced in the (first) number, write the editors, the present issue contains studies in three forms of prose-writing too often neglected, but whose practice and survival, we suggest, essentially enriches a literary culture. These three modes of expression are, (1) the prose poem, (2) the dialogue, and (3) the autobiographical fragment . . . This defence of three neglected forms is not to be interpreted as a plea for a misty and amorphous romantic hang-over; since we desire to balance the imaginative and the logical, the fantastic and the factual - and, indeed, all those antithetical properties generally considered the monopoly of the romantic or classical attitudes." The covers are by Dorothy Colles and Heather Child, and contributions come from Dannie Abse, John Bayliss, Iris Birtwistle, Antony Borrow, Roy Campbell (translates Lorca), Iain Fletcher, G.S. Fraser, Herbert Palmer, Howard Parsona,Kathleen Raine, John Waller, Howard Sergeant, Evelyn D. Soresen, Derek Stanford and Henry Treece. "Muriel handed over the prose contents of Forum to me (remembered Stanford) keeping the verse for herself . . . Our experience of editing Forum together convinced us that we worked well as collaborators. Spark had founded the magazine the previous year following her departure from the Poetry Society and the editorship of Poetry Review, but it never took off - at the time it folded, it boasted only 80 subscribers." Neat small amout og handwriting on rear cover of first issue (the start of a poem) o/w VG with some sl rusting of the staples.
