Published in conjunction with the exhibition "Julius Muller, Suriname 100 jaar geleden" in honor of the fiftieth anniversary of the Stchting Surinaams Museum, Paramaribo, April 29, 1997. - Text in Dutch. - - Julius Eduard Muller (Paramaribo, November 20, 1846 - ibid., November 20, 1902) was a Surinamese civil servant, entrepreneur, politician, and amateur photographer. He photographed subjects he encountered professionally or considered important as a member of parliament. He took photos of plantations, gold mining, farm settlers and other immigrants, and cityscapes of Paramaribo. Muller used dry gelatin glass plates and albumen paper, the most common photographic materials around 1880. No negatives of his photographs are known to exist. His first photograph dates from 1883. The equipment Muller used was likely acquired during his time in the Netherlands. He never adopted newer photographic techniques.
