In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: New. The parrot Green saree is the story of two women, two generations and two worlds moulded out of memory, expectations, and desire. Set primarily in the United States, this is also the story of displacement and loss, of a remembered homeland, of political and personal battles, of individual freedom. And it is about rebirth. (In Bengali, the novel was titled Phoenix.) The last novel of Dev Sen's Naxal trilogy, the parrot Green sari explores the ethical and existential dilemmas of the urban, intellectual Indian, much like the two novels that precede iti, an up am and in a foreign land, by chance. But it is unique in the way it looks at political issues through a turbulent mother−daughter relationship, bringing to Indian literature in Bengali, perhaps for the first time, a fascinating, highbrow, sexually daring, 'unmotherly' mother of a grown-up daughter. Can the brilliant, charming, and sexually adventurous Bipasha, an internationally renowned academic and poet, win back the love and confidence of Rohini, her alienated teenage daughter? And could the two women ever be friends? (jacket).

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. Androgyny is an engaging subject of discussion and research in the present times. This volume makes an effort to understand concepts of androgyny and 'nari bhav' or sensibility of the feminine beyond the anatomy-directed definitions circumscribed within the dubious realm of the 'third sex' or 'third gender'. As expressed through various literary and performative traditions in India that emphasize interrelatedness of art and society, the concept of 'nari bhav' is a deeply rooted cultural belief in the fluid interplay of the female and the male symbolized, for example, as Ardhanariswara. The belief that the constant interplay of duality engenders balance and harmony in both personal and social aspects of human life, and the acknowledgment of the existence of male and female tendencies-physiological and/or emotional-psychological-within each individual has aesthetic validity, may be seen to form the basis of female impersonation in India. Such perception urges more inclusiveness in social attitudes, easier acceptance of different sexualities and ways of expressing gender. The volume discusses concepts of androgyny that permeate Indian cultural ethos and as expressed through female impersonators not only in religion, theatre and dance but also in contemporary performative mediums like films, television and the internet. The volume also presents interactions with performers of the dying art form of female impersonation.

Like Yuddhishthira, who is faced with the puzzling questions posed to him by the enigmatic Yaksha in the Mahabharata, the Indian Everyman, conscious of dharma and niti, is expected to find answers to ethical and existential dilemmas. While the Ramayana, the Mahabharata and Silappadikaram are the best known of the sacred narratives of the past, there exists a vast reservoir of other epics many still in the oral tradition. This compendium, the first of its kind, explores the many literary traditions and strands that run parallel but also provide interesting contrasts in the experience of the epics. The multiple frames provide a cultural continuum which shapes and is shaped by the epics.
