The author seeks to paint a series of pictures, the reflections of scenes and aspects in nature, which in his mind awaken poetic interest, leaving them to do their proper work. Green cloth boards, gilt title to spine, gilt vignette of monkey and boys to front board. 12 b/w illustrations, drawn by Wolf and engraved by Whymper. xiv and 372 pages including index, 4 pages of publisher adverts to rear. First series, second impression. Boards are rubbed, grubby, and edge-worn. Joints cracked and starting to split. Front endpaper removed, to 1.5" of half-title page removed (not affecting the title). Hinges pulled but binding is still holding. A little foxing and a few grubby marks to contents. Plate opposite page 358 (plate XII - The Sea-Serpent) has some red marks and discolouration. A good working copy, sold with all faults. Packaged with care and promptly dispatched!
