Publisher's black cloth in illustrated jacket priced at 10/6. Contents clean, birthday inscription to front endpaper, jacket with some general wear, chips and tears, some rubbing and creases. Very good. First-hand account of Cretan resistance and the audacious and successful capture of General Kreipe by SOE Commandos Patrick Leigh Fermor and Moss as second-in-command. The author was awarded the Military Cross 'for outstanding courage and audacity' during the kidnap. The book was adapted for the 1957 film (U.S title 'Night Ambush') starring Dirk Bogarde as 'Paddy' Leigh Fermor and David Oxley as Moss. Leigh Fermor is often cited as one of the real-life inspirations for secret agent James Bond. A contemporary and friend of fellow explorer Peter Fleming and his journalist brother Ian, Fermor is considered one of the greatest 20th century travel writers and, as a man of both action and intellect, was described by the BBC as 'a cross between Indiana Jones, James Bond and Graham Greene.'.
