Ferree Professor of American History at Pennsylvania State University. A Detroit native, he earned his Ph.D. in American Civilization from Brown and went on to publish influential works such as The Golden Age of Black Nationalism, 1850-1925 and The Wings of Ethiopia, establishing himself as a leading interpreter of black nationalist thought, religious myth, and African American political leadership.
