Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. First edition. Fine in modestly age-toned very good or better dust jacket. The first commercial book appearance of these five poets, preceding Berryman's and Jarrell's own separate first books by two years. Inscribed by John Berryman to a philosophy professor at Columbia University: "To Irwin Edman: On page 45, a paper on aesthetics long overdue. with sincere regard, John Berryman. Boston 18 Oct 1941." Laid in is the front of the original mailing parcel hand-addressed by Berryman to Edman, with his name repeated in the return address. Page 45 contains Berryman's introduction to the selection of his poems entitled "A Note on Poetry." Both Edman and Berryman both belonged to the Boar's Head Society at Columbia, a social group devoted to poetry. Berryman graduated from Columbia in 1936, so, indeed, his paper (whatever it was) was long overdue.
