The edges of the front cover are heavily stained with chips to the corners of both covers and to the spine. Includes an obituary of Professor of Hebrew Bela Bates Edwards (1802-1852). The American clergyman and academic William Adams (1807-1880) was ordained as pastor of the Congregational Church in Brighton, Massachusetts in 1831. He subsequently went on to take over ministry at the Central Presbyterian Church on Broome Street in New York City. The American biblical scholar Moses Stuart (1780-1852) was admitted to the Connecticut bar after graduating from Yale University. He became pastor of the Congregational Center Church of New Haven in 1806 and, in 1810, was appointed professor of sacred literature at Andover Theological Seminary. Despite having but elementary knowledge of Hebrew and Greek he prepared a Hebrew grammar for his students which went on to be published in an enlarged form in 1821, with a copious syntax and praxis. He became acquainted with the German works in hermeneutics of Johann Friedrich Schleusner, Seiler and Gesenius, teaching himself German. Though his studies evoked suspicion from his colleagues, he gained their respect as a result of his "Letter to Dr Channing on the Subject of Religious Liberty" in 1830. He published a second edition of his "Hints on the Interpretation of Prophecy" in 1842.

Born in Virginia, Bagby practiced medicine but became more widely recognized for his wit and humor, which he often incorporated into his literary output. His most famous work, What I Did with My Fifty Millions, humorously critiques the nature of sudden wealth and the moral dilemmas associated with it.
